Turn Signals are dead

I have run into a very puzzling issue on my 1991 300GD (at least it’s puzzling to me). My blinkers stopped working for no apparent reason. The emergency flashers still work fine, but nothing happens when I try the turn signals. I’ve changed out the “Hella” blinker/flasher relay and the turn signal arm as well as checking all the fuses and still nothing. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help,
Doc

Sounds to me like a broken/disconnected wire or a bad ground connection somewhere. A VOM should help you track down the former.

RE: Turn Signals are dead

No Dutch, you're supposed to say it's something simple and easy to find like "i need to fill the blinker fluid"!

I guess you could try that. Let us know if it works.

Re: Turn Signals are dead

The fuses and relays that you replaced were they fuses F11, F13 and turn signal relay #4?

Personally I would not just check the fuses but replace them.

Also just to be clear did you say that you replaced the blinker stalk?

There was a discussion about a related problem in the above thread. Some parts might be useful.

Re: Turn Signals are dead

Resurrecting an old thread.

Recently, after starting up my 1995 G320 after not running it for a few days, I noticed that upon turning on the headlights, the following happened:

- The right-hand (passenger-side) arrow stayed lit in the instrument cluster
- The right-hand front turn indicator on top of the front fender stayed lit brightly
- The right-hand rear turn indicator in the taillight stayed lit
- Activating the turn signal lever to indicate a right turn, the turn signal would not blink (just stayed lit)
- Activating the turn signal lever to indicate a left turn, the turn signal blinked as normal (while the right side stayed lit brightly)

After driving the truck for a couple of miles, the indicator lamp in the cluster went out and all functions returned to normal.

Yesterday, after picking my truck up at the airport after returning from a four-day business trip, I noticed the same symptoms. Also, I could not activate the emergency flashers (would not activate/flash). Again the left-turn indicator worked fine, but the right-turn exterior indicator lamps stayed lit with instrument cluster illuminated. This stayed during the entire 75-mile trip home from the airport.

Some research and deduction indicated that the turn signal relay may be at fault. I did find that my Federalized G320 had the clear-blue Hella relay, as in the attached image.

Removing the relay, cancelled all turn signal/emergency flasher function.

I removed the cover and examined the circuit board for solder-related flaws. I didn't see any flaws or other obvious physical issues, so I snapped the circuit board back into the housing and replaced the relay into its socket.

It worked as it should (both turn signals operating, flasher operating, no arrow lit in the cluster). However, I also noticed that when I activated the turn signal (either left or right), the double-arrow lamp at the bottom of the cluster (which normally blinks only when the emergency flashers are activated) would blink ONCE in unison with the blinker arrow, and then it would not blink again, while the correct indicator arrow blinked as normal.

I don't think it is the turn signal stalk, because the stalk is working both when the relay was not, and now when it is.

I have ordered a new replacement relay from Rovers North (evidently, certain Range Rovers used the same relay). It is supposed to be a direct replacement for the old relay. I'll report back when I get the relay to see if I remedied the issue.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: Turn Signals are dead

The last time I had this problem it was the turn signal relay that had given up the ghost. I found myself without turn signals whilst driving. ( Not a pleasant experience when driving ) Thankfully it wasn't such a long way from home so I used the old fashioned hand signals but I was determined not to get caught out again so I always carry a spare. It's now one of my essentials spares for ANY trip.

Re: Turn Signals are dead

I received the replacement relay from Rovers North today in the mail (pretty fast service). It was a direct fit, and the size of the relay case was the exact same as the Hella relay. All four of the pins were also labeled with the same numbers.

The relay was made in China, and was totally different on the inside (I removed it from the case and examined it before installing it). It is MUCH more integrated as a circuit board with small components, and not nearly as mechanical/complex as the original Hella unit.

It cost $19 + $4.50 shipping, so not too bad.

Upon installing it, everything worked as it should. However, interestingly, I noticed that the "flasher" light in the bottom of the instrument cluster would flash ONCE (along with the proper turn signal arrow on either side of the speedo dial), and then the blinker arrow would continue flashing, when the turn signal lever was activated to indicate a turn to one side or the other.

The dashboard "flasher" light worked as expected when I activated the flasher switch on the center dash.

Interestingly, but after I had removed and examined the original Hella relay, it behaved just fine all weekend when I used the truck. I will keep it as a spare.

For reference of others, the Rovers North page with the part is here:

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: Turn Signals are dead

I vaguely remember something similar after taking the truck "swimming".  I think water got into the back lights and it acted funny for a while until I cleaned and greased all of the light sockets.
