My next mods, updates, maintenance

1. New shoes for my 20" brabus Summer Rims  (next week)

2. AMG bumpers, fender flares & bullbar (ongoing , have all the parts , just need the time to pre-fit or test the mounting)

2. W164 Grill (looking for another good deal on ebay of that famous 250 Euro Seller)

3. MY2002 Side mirror (waiting to pounce on a MY2002+ set on ebay)

4. ML55 hood  (will eventually buy one from the dealer before I paint the new bumpers, only found used ones in US)

5. When 1-4 are finished , then I'll look into Offroad setups (lift kit, big BFG tyres, winch setup for my old bumpers,  roof tent, etc...)

Re: My next mods, updates, maintenance

Nice list of mods... after I get my tranny on the next mod I want is the ML55 hood. I was planning on puting in a 430 engine I found for $1500 (60K miles) but I think that would be a PITA to tackle.

MLOFFROAD,

Especially as your new tranny won't handle it ! Each Transmission matches the engine!!!!

Only a few models share transmissions ML500, ML55AMG, ML400CDI! ... the rest have their own transmission internals

... The electronics (shifts differently)  , as well as some minor mechanical parts are different.... make sure you match your engine when you get that transmission!

hey wolfgang post those 2 links from haralds site again here !.

Here's Harald's transmission info.

PS. I would go for a rebuilt instead of used, if possible.

Re: My next mods, updates, maintenance

Is there any chance I can source a manual tranny and put that in my 320?? What do you all think would be involved in doing this swap??

Re: My next mods, updates, maintenance

Sounds expensive to me! Not the transmission , but rather the conversion ... .pedal assembly, cables, mountngs, gear selector, etc....

Ask ttaleric where that cheap  rebuild place is !..... You should be able to do it for <= 2K!.

The manual tranny from the ML 270 was incapable of taking more than 370nM torque and the ML 270's with that manual tranny were detuned from 400nM as a result, not that that tranny is likely to be available in the US. Furthermore, the ML 270, with the manual tranny, did WORSE mpg in urban areas than the automatic! although the ML 270 with the manual tranny used less fuel on open roads.

I would think that trying to mate any other tranny to the ML would be both an engineering nightmare and very expensive for little, if any, gain.

I read that for off-road purposes a manual tranny is undesirable because there is a complete loss of drive when you change gear, whereas an automatic tranny always maintains drive even whilst changing gear; apparently loss of drive in mud, or whilst crossing water, can lead to the vehicle coming to a stop and not having the traction to be able to move off again without being towed.

Re: My next mods, updates, maintenance

Ya, I figured it would cost an arm and a leg to do the conversion... I guess its just one of those ideas thats better in concept than in reality. LOL. Sorry to hijack this thread Peter. Now back to topic. Keep us updated on your mods, I espacially want to hear about your off-road mods.
