Coolant Hoses

I changed the water pump a few weeks ago. While I was at it, I replaced majority of the hoses. I have noticed that after I have shut off the engine for a little while, the hoses create a small vaccuum.

Two of the hoses shown are brand new. When the engine is running, the hoses do not build very much pressure. The temperature has been extremely constant and has not gone above 90'C. I also remember seeing the hoses collapse before I changed the circulation pump too.

Is this normal?

You obviously have a good tight system. My guess is that your replacement hoses may not have quite the rigidity of your OEM hoses. I wouldn't worry about it unless the collapse completely under the vacuum.

(edit: I just saw the photo. That does seem to be a bit extreme. Did you bleed the air out of the system? Did you use an OEM radiator cap?)

I ass-u-me that you bled all air out of the system and that you used 40-50% MB antifreeze to replace what was lost.

What happens when you open the radiator cap when cold? Is there room for more coolant? If so, have you topped it? Does that help?

RE: Coolant Hoses

The radiator cap is at fault here. It is supposed to break any vacuum generated in the system. Replace it (they are cheap) or clean any crud out of the valve in the cap.

RE: Coolant Hoses

Simple. You've got a bad radiator cap. There is a valve in the top that opens to allow air in as the system cools. It's probably corroded shut.

Re: Coolant Hoses

I bled the system, and it is filled to the proper capacity. I am using Prestone DEX-Cool (the orange stuff). I am using about a 60% solution (which is within specs). The hoses are brand new Mercedes hoses for the G-Wagon (with 463 part numbers too) that I purchased from Sean at EuroTruck. It also has a brand new thermostat.

I will check the radiator cap in the morning. I think that I may have one on the shelf. If I need to purchase it, can I get retail, or do I need to get the actual Mercedes Part?

Not exactly. MB calls for 50% with a maximum of 55%. See the attached page from the MB G Maintenance Manual.

FWIW, in the milder climate of Atlanta, I use 40% for better heat dissipation.

RE: Antifreeze Spec

I used the Prestone instructions while filling. So far, the temperatures have been right on...

See owners manual for cooling system capacity.  install minimum 50%, maximum 70% Prestone Dex-Cool Approved Antifreeze/Coolant.  Add water to fill radiator.  Run engine to normal operating temperture with heater on high.  Shut off engine.  Allow to cool.  Check coolant level and add water or coolant again if necessary.  Remove coolant from recovery tank and fill with 50/50 mixture of Prestone Dex-Cool Approved Antifreeze/Coolant and water.
