| Brake Squeal...STILL!
I can't believe it! We still have the brake squeal. I'm desperate for answers. What do you all think it could be? The brakes are good, or so I'm told. We had them checked a few months ago by an indie shop, and rather than rip us off, he told us the truth and they were good. Please! Anything. Any ideas are welcome and appreciated. Thanks.    |

There are basically six causes of disc brake squeal:
1. Completely worn pads with exposed metal backing contacting the disc. The solution is to replace the pads (and probably the rotors, too, as they will likely be badly scored).
2. Uneven pad contact with the rotor. This is often caused by a pad binding on its slides, which is resolved by polishing and lubricating the slide surfaces. It can also be caused by a defective caliper, which is resolved by its replacement.
3. Chatter where the pad vibrates as it contacts the disc. This is not so common with modern disc brake systems as the pads are usually secured tightly to the caliper with spring clips. Brake paste, which is an adhesive, can be applied to the back of the pads to better secure them to the calipers.
4. Unusually large metal chunks in the semi-metallic pad. Other than putting up with it until the chunk is worn away during normal braking, the only other solution is to sand down the surface of the pads past the chunk.
5. Brake dust buildup on the pads and rotors. This is why slotted rotors were invented. Also, slots in the pads can help somewhat, too (if your pads aren’t slotted, you can slot them yourself with a table saw – just one straight slot, perpendicular to the disc rotation direction, about 75% of the depth of the pad stock). There are also some spray-on chemicals that will help with this. These sprays generally do two things: they clean the dust away and they corrode the rotor surfaces. That corrosion acts like sandpaper to clean the pads. It’s probably better to just “knock them down”, which is removing the pads and rotors and roughing the surfaces with sandpaper to remove the shine. Some mechanics also suggest making a few hard (i.e. ABS-activating) stops per week to help this. Of course for the sake of safety and your tires, it’s best to do that in an empty, wet open lot.
6. Debris between the rotor and pad. This is especially common with off-road vehicles. Sometimes this is resolved through normal braking, other times it may require very hard braking, but the best thing to do is physically remove the debris so nothing gets damaged.

I was lucky enough for Mercedes to take me on an off-road course during which a stone got stuck in between the rotor and the pads, the instructor told me to reverse and brake hard to remove the stone, it worked after two or three attempts (we were on a grassy field at the time).
