Report on F1 Tires

My rear tires were getting slippery when wet at about 10,000 miles, so I replaced all four tires with Goodyear Eagle F1s, on the strength of their winning first place in a recent Car and Driver article. The tires were rated highest in the wet and were nearly as good in the dry.

Someone on another forum said that the tires were not so sticky under 45 degrees F. This is, I think, true: when I first start out on a wet cold day, they're easy to break loose under firm acceleration. I have not noticed them being at all dangerous in the wet.

Under hard cornering, I felt that the tires were breaking away sooner than the old ones, but it's hard to tell as I'm comparing with last season. The breakaway on the F1s is very progressive: you can feel them losing grip very incrementally, which I prefer to that thing where suddenly with no warning you are spinning down the expressway like a dreidel. ("Uh Oh!" -- Po)

The tires were inflated to the top end of the normal recommended range when hot. A pal of mine from T'ai Chi class told me the F1s like to be well-inflated. So yesterday while getting the parking lights replaced (another topic), I had them run up to 2 pounds over. The difference is very noticeable. The ride is a bit more bumpy, but it is also very discernibly more sporty. More stick, steadier in the turns, and at high speed.

Bottom line, I like the tires.

So what's the road pressure your using Ron?

i'm running Es100 YokoMama's at the moment. 38 on the road 32 on the track all round seems to be ideal.

I agree, the Antenna certainly resembles the SLk.

Thanks, J. By the way your picture, though it displays tiny, is about 2000 pixels wide and downloads VERY slowly. It might be nice, as a courtesy, to upload a shrunken one. I'm a bit surprised that the site doesn't shrink them, but apparently it doesn't.

My son bumped them 2 pounds above nominal, so I think they're at something like 34 front / 38 rear.

Interesting that you find them better soft on the track ... the F1s definitely feel to me as if they corner better with more air in them.

I'm suprised thats very low if your talking warm. I was talking cold readings sorry.

I think the ES100 work at about 40 when hot. Hence on the track they get so much hotter due to sliding, constant braking and acceleration. The road wouldn't really get the tyres this warm so need more PSI.

Yes, my figs are cold. I think the tires recommend 32/36 on them, though I'll have to look to be sure of that. Anyway, I could tell the difference of the two pounds, both in ride, a bit more bumpy, and in handling, rather more sticky.
