There is a delay in ALL of the gauges

There is a delay in ALL of the gauges - tachometer, speedomoeter, temp and fuel gauge when I startup the car - like 5 seconds where they're all ZERO and then it comes on.

outside temp, clock are fine as is the back light....

Any ideas?

RE: There is a delay in ALL of the gauges

Checkout the WIS section - Instrument Cluster - Diagnosis

Couldn't find anything mentioning a time delay ..... must be the cluster itself ! those Quartz "thingabybobs"?......

RE: There is a delay in ALL of the gauges

Yeah... Did you see there is a HHT (Hand Held Tester) also! I presume the dealer doesn't have one of those , and will use the SDS .....

It seems to me that the cheaper option would be to live with it until a ebay cluster is listed! .... I often see them on ebay.de ..... and besides you might want to take this opportunity to upgrade to a "AMG" white face type one! ....

The price of a ebay cluster would probably be cheaper than the dealer repair (given the risk of purchasing a faulty one

Speaking of a new cluster , I would try to quickly exchange it with someone elses (junkyard?) ..... to see if  the problem is then fixed.

It's real easy to remove..... 2 min job! ....

1. Lower Steering column

2. Panels below cluster (plastic wedge tool)

3. Cluster Frame cover (the plastic ring slide ... see WIS)

4. Remove screws/pins

5. Lift cluster out

PS: There is a DIY from Drew/Benza on BW as well as the WIS (I've pulled mine out at least 20 Times!) ....I'll dig it out if you need it.

Your problem doesn't seem to be known as comming for parts external to the cluster. According to the WIS the problems due to external sensors, actuators, parts, etc.... will cause the cluster guages either to work or not! no delay! There was a listing of working for 8s , them problems ... .but your problem is the other way around.

RE: There is a delay in ALL of the gauges

From Stafford (Oawaacp@aol.com):

I've had to access mine recently due to the, somewhat, same problem. Here is how I did it which is fairly simple:

1. Remove both "D" shaped panels that are on each side of the steering column. You may want to release the steering lever so that you can push up the steering column. This will enable you to use your finger to pry behind the "D" panel while pulling towards you (don't be afraid to pull hard or use a flat head screw driver to pry the other side w/o scratching the plastic). There are 3 pressure fasteners (like the ones on door panels) on each panel. Use the same procedure for the panel on the other side.

2. With both panels removed. Adjust steering column down as far as it can go. Immediately above the steering column is a thin color-keyed dash panel strip. Yes, use finger again to pry thin panel at base. This space is tight and you may need to maneuver panel out of this space.

3. Now that 3 color-keyed dash panels are removed the black plastic trim around the instrument panel is next to remove. Locate the 2 plastic latches on bottom of plastic trim at either side of steering column and pull to release while pushing down. This will release the trim from the dash. Note the alignment slots and tabs when reinstalling trim.

4. You are now ready to remove dash. Remove 2 metal screws on either side of instrument panel and 2 plastic screws above dash. The only thing attaching to the dash should be the electrical cable for the electronics. Pull-up the release and the connector should popup out of the socket.

5. The instrument panel should be free of attachments but will take some maneuvering to get it out. Now you should have access to the bulbs.

Instrument panel installation is the reverse of above. BTW I didn't have a new bulb so I used one from the fog light indicator since mine was not activated when the fog light was activated.

Good luck! You can email me directly if you have any difficulty.

RE: There is a delay in ALL of the gauges

I don't like this DIY .... don't use the wedge to lever the frame down fro the top ..... use the tabs on the bottom to slide the frame!!!!

.... and adjust the steering column down prior to removing the D-Panels.... make removal much easier.

I note that someone said they had seen the problem before and it was due to a bad resistor, therefore, it might be a good idea to look for resistors on the cluster and check their value against the colour coding (hopefully you know what I mean), this is a long shot but it would be worth spending a few minutes on it.

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/IC.html has the pinouts

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/v-class/1187771-warning-lights-flas... has a similar problem

http://forums.mbworld.org/forums/showpost.php?p=887283&postcount=8 seems to have a fix for the problem!

Great find!

Some of the reasons for the failures are described here:

Looks like the S/CL cluster recall will be announced this coming Saturday...

There is a delay in ALL of the gauges - tachometer, speedomoeter, temp and fuel gauge when I startup the car - like 5 seconds where they're all ZERO and then it comes on.

outside temp, clock are fine as is the back light....

Any ideas?

Could you fix the problem, roadsession?

I still haven't had time to try it...will do next week and report back...
I bought electrical contact spray cleaner at Autozone.

So I pulled the cluster
Removed the connector
Sprayed the electrical contact cleaner good...

put the cluster back.

started the car - the gauges work perfect....
reset the clock...

And then turned car off, and restarted the car - again - 5 second delay for all gauges (all other lights / warning lights work instantly)

Seems intermittent.

Oh well, I may live with it....
