Door Lock Issue

Group,
Our ML exhibited the dreaded machine gun lock issue. By searching another forum I have been able to find the troubled door. Left rear. The lock mechanism has more resistance than the rest causing this problem. It is still covered under the 30 day warranty from CarMax. Now the questions are:

1) Are the lock assemblies repairable?
2) If so is the repair reliable?
3) or should the lock assembly be replaced?

My fear is that they are going to attempt a repair just to get it past the 30 day warranty. We do however have an extended warranty that will cover this but is the MaxCare warranty worth a flip? We should be able to take it to the dealer but with a higher deductable $75 vs. $50

RE: Door Lock Issue

Seen my DIY on this?  I'll post in the DIY Sticky? It's a simple job that will however require you to drill out the rivets holding the rear window rail.

... No the lock (actuator) is not repairable .... It's a complete unit that gets replaced (not that expensive either!)

 Good luck! .....

PS: This problem seem to be in the category "wear and tear" with ML's .....

I bought graphite lubricant in a spray and sprayed it into the binding lock actuator.
It is now fixed.

Worth a shot.

Did you use Lock-Eaz in the little blue can? That stuff is the best.

Excellent choice. I use it on a lot of stuff. Almost any hardware store sells it.
One day I saw my dad spraying WD-40 into his locks and freaked out. Lubes like that will ruin locks.

I purchased a spray graphite from NAPA. I set out to do a DYI article on the rear doors and stopped when I had to drill out the rivets for the air bag. I have pictures up to the removeal of the airbag...

Why do you need to remove the airbags to change the lock. The lock will slide out the bottom without the need to touch the airbags or at least that's how it was on my car. Just curious?

RE: Door Lock Issue

Yeah no Airbag removal necessary ..... just drill out the rivets for the rear window rail....

Re: Door Lock Issue

Any pdf or pictures of the disassembly of the rear door lock actuators? Since this seems to be a common problem, I'd hope someone would have them. Got the panel off without breaking a single clip and saw the airbag and turned around (call me chicken....). put it back together but am reluctant to take it to the dealer. $400.00+ for the repair is a bit outrageous IMHO. Thanks.

Hi guys,

I have a "machine gun" lock on the front passenger door of a 2000 ML 430 with side air bags. I can't actually lock the car at the moment because of this. I have some graphite so I'm happy to give this a go, but where do I spray the graphite?

Do you have to remove the lock actuator to do this?

If this doesn't work I was wondering if I could simply disconnect that actuator as an interim fix ( so I can at least lock the car) - any opinions or suggestions ?

Thanks,
Kevin

Lock actuator can be repaired

The door actuators - root cause for the machine gun noise- can be repaired with less then $10 (using epoxy glue) and some patience.

Problem with these actuators is that they have a poor mechanical stack-up, to little travel of the microswitches. The plastic cams who are pushing the microswitches are made of plastic and they wear out. In the end, the microswitch is not actuated and even the door system is closed the feedback to the computer is sending a signal that the door is not closed, therefore the computer imitiates another close cycle.

Take the actuator out of the door and open it (it can be opened and closed back w/o problems). Identify the cams that are pushing the microswitches.

Add little epoxy on the cam surface ( about 1mm, no more) to compensate for the wear out. Let it dry, eventually file it to for a smooth surface

Install everything back. It should work.
