Weird throaty noise during acceleration

I had the all the windows open yesterday, and when my mom or dad accelerated, I heard a deep, throaty noise coming from somewhere underneath. It doesn't sound normal. What do you think it could be?

TIA

That sort of noise can be caused by the air filter not being properly closed, otherwise check the exhaust system, possibly by putting your foot (feet) over the exhaust pipe end(s) and listening for leaks.

eh I wouldn't complain about it... when my car gets to 4,800-6,000 rpm redline it sounds like it has a super charger, but the MLs do have a large air intake which can produce a few different sounds depending on the RPM.

Haha, very funny guys.

It doesn't sound normal seriously. It's not a sporty, throaty noise, but a scratchy throaty noise.

Oh, and, uh what exactly happens if left too long without replacing?

Asian, I would go get your name on the list. If you look around, (maybe Noodles can chime in) people have been waiting for these cats for quite some time. Roll under there and check it out.

I hate to ask, but is there a pic of it?

How would I go about getting my name on the list?

Oh, and are the cats on back-order or something? How long until I would get one, if I were to need one.

I'm going to give the dealer a call about this tomorrow. You have a copy of the recall in one of the sticky threads right?

EDIT: The link Wolfgang gives in the TSB sticky thread says 1999-2001 only. Ours is a 2002. Can anyone enlighten me?

TIA

Well if it is the cat the campaign for for bad welds is for 1999-2001 only. Both 320s and 430s.

Yes letters are going out in waves to not overwhelm the source of parts but based on the 2 month wait we had
that plan is not working. About ten days ago I finally called MBUSA and very nicely told them that I found the
wait time to be unacceptable. A week later the part showed up even though they still show the part as back ordered
on the Star Tek site. Hmmmm

The good news is that under federal law they should replace it for free if it is failing because it is an emissions related failure.

It will be hard to see it unless the trcuk is up in the air because it is usaully the front one that fails. There are two cats on
each side of the truck. The front one is difficult to get a really good look at on the ground.

What's TITTFD?

Am I out of luck since it won't be under the recall (if it really is the cats)?

Don't know about the U.S. other than California, but in Canada and specifically Ontario, we have emission tests and if the vehicle fails, the manufacturer is on the hook. Even before the etests, there was a 10 year emission responsibility from car makers.

Check and see what the deal is with the great lake state

No emissions tests that I am aware of here. The last time we were required to take the cars in for anything by the state was...well...never.
