Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

finally unpacked the Nissens a couple of days ago to drop it into a cleaned engine bay.

Mayor disappointment!
Radiator is so damaged that it won't even drop into place if I were to ignore the damages.

Outside package without a flaw.
Inside package shows several severe impacts onto the radiator's feet
Aside from that the unit is warped by about 1"

Since the radiator is already in Mexico even a free replacement will cost me $200 in shipping to La Paz

not happy!

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

What a disappointment!

If the outside was flawless and the damage was internal, I think I would try to back charge the supplier on my credit card as being damaged before it shipped.

A real bummer!

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

That is disheartening to hear. I just purchased a Nissens radiator for my 2003 G500. After reading your post, I plan on taking a picture of a sealed box prior to opening just in case it is poor packing on the part of manufacturer and not careless handling of shipper.

As an aside, did you replace the water pump while the radiator was out? I plan on a revamp of entire coolant system (thermostat, hoses, water pump) at the same time. I have 200,000 miles on the original water pump and while I practice the art of "if it aint broke, don't fix it" as the original owner I know none have ever been replaced.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

Update

Received the Nissen radiator via fed ex. The shipping box appeared undamaged so I was very hopeful the product was in good shape. However, upon opening the box containing the radiator I was disappointed to find little in the way of packing material to protect the product. Turns out it was damaged in same fashion as Harold’s. Top of radiator crushed about one incch on right top. My take is Nissen is not properly packaging the product for shipment. I returned the product and am shelling out extra $ for the Behr. Live and learn

The liability is on the shipper, gentlemen. That's what insurance is for.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

since my radiator had been shipped to Mexico there was no simple way to ship it back and get a (possibly damaged as well) replacement
so, a friend of mine carefully repaired the bent sections
radiator is in and works fine

the 2 extra cooler in/outlet connections on the left are very close to an oil line
too close for comfort and the in/outlet have very sharp edges
I secured them with plastic caps I found in my garage collection

during my search for a solution I found a manufacturer in Mexico who sells the Nissen radiator (without the Nissen name stamps) for $150

Just bought one off of Rock Auto.  Arrived looking perfect.  I needed a new one since the seal around the oil cooler nipple in the driver's side tank was starting to leak.

Did you save your old one as a spare and didn't you have one rebuilt at one point?

Nope.  Still running on the original radiator for now.  Leaks and all.  As long as I drive it with the radiator cap loose it doesn't leak enough to worry about.

We've had a cluster of car issues with the other cars.   The most time consuming was a (plugged) underhood drain in our E300 that backed up water into the cabin.  Came back from a trip to find the driver's side of the interior 5" deep in water.  Pulled the interior out and found that the sound foam molded to the carpet is 4" thick in places.  It holds an astounding amount of water.  Anyway, it is sitting in the car repair bay of our garage.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

I hear you, buddy. The joys of vintage vehicle ownership.
If it is the foam, I believe they mold it to a rubber acoustic barrier and that it is thus not easily replaceable.
If it is a cotton recycled fiber material and you want to replace it, I can help you with acquiring the material. Was it the condensate drain that backed up from the HVAC?

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

I am getting ready to order a new Nissens radiator for my G320, per Dutch's notes above. Confirmed with the EPC that it is the correct radiator.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

Water got into the area around the brake booster.  Due to a plugged drain near the upper a-arm mount it piled up until it got to a cable pass through into the cabin.  There it dribbled down under the carpet.

The carpet has molded on foam blobs.  Most are dry now.  Still working on the rest.  It will be impossible to remove all of the water.  I'm thinking of holing the underfloor duct to the back seat area in order force hot air into the cavity after it is reassembled.

It is a real mess.  The car is otherwise in great shape.

RE: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

checked the left side connector on the Nissens today. It looks like it is about to damage to the large hydraulic line from the PS.
May have to cut off that part.
pics tomorrow

Harald, How has the radiator been cooling your truck? The Nissens core is supposed to be better than the Behr core. Curious.

The factory Behr doesn't have this spare inlet, correct?
