Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

We've had a bit of a heat wave in London and as I was idling in traffic I noticed the temp kept climbing and at one point went very close to the 120 mark. I was really glad to get away from the traffic but what would have happened if I'd stayed for another hour? I got caught in some more traffic later but this time the A/C was on and the temp was just above 80 in the middle( what I think should be normal for a hot day). The fan clutch was changed last year, I have checked it and it feels 'right'. Unless this is acceptable I would like to know what is going. Any ideas?

RE: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

Hot day, idling, AC is probably on...no worries. If the needle keeps moving up with no stopping, then I get worried.

RE: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

The A/C wasn't on when I took that shot and that's why I'm worried.

RE: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

Definitely worth a check - here in Arizona summer-time temps are in the 120f range, and my needle still doesn't seem to climb any higher than where it sits during winter temps.

Mine 91 does this occasionally. It gets to that point then the thermostat opens and it drops down to 80. AC not on. Truck drives great no signs of problems from this.

Re: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

I would not worry. What you describe is what petrol engines do in that situation - they hate idling motionless on a hot day as they get no cooling wind through the radiator.

Try turning the ac on next time - it makes the electric fans active - that may help.

I did turn on the A/C and it cooled down. So what do those models without A/C do? Because it felt like that thing could have gone all the way up!

Correct. Turn on the heat and the fan. Cools it right down. Of course this makes you overheat a bit.

Nice trick. I tried it the last time the fan clutch died on the highway back home. We were on a trip from the coast when I noticed the fan clutch wasn't doing much! I turned the heater on with the windows open but that didn't help. It was roasting in the car. It's Funny that these cooling issues only happen in summertime. It would have been a very welcome fault in the winter.

RE: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

95 G300 is a petrol model with the M103 engine?

If yes, is the electric fan working as it should? If I remember it should go on full speed around 100 deg C. Mine was not working and it was caused by a faulty temeperature sensor.

RE: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

This diagram should be helpful if there is a problem with the electric fan...

Yes same exact model. I’m confused here. Where’s the electric fan? I thought the fan clutch was the only cooling mechanism for the engine. I’ve always associated the electric fans with the A/C ????!!!! You mean the electric fan is meant to kickoff on a thermostat???
Wow .... I’ll have it checked. Thanks

There is a product by RED LINE, "Water Wetter" that I have used. It helps.

My experience with it is that it really does nothing.

It´s in front the radiator, You can see it through the grille. It´s activated by two temeprature sensors. If I remember one is on the engine block and one is on the A/C compressor.

I'm unable to locate the temperature sensor on the engine. Any clues as to where it it? The A/C certainly manages to trigger the fan so it wont be that one.

Re: Is this NORMAL or DANGEROUS?

I dont know if this is helpful. On my diesel 290 the switch is high up and close to where the water comes out of the engine and into the top hose of the radiator.. It only triggers the elelctric fans when the engine temp gets to a little higher than your picture reflects. Switching on the ac activates the fans sooner as this happens via the ac circuit, and on my vehicle, at lower water temps, hence my first comment.
