ABS light

Starting an old thread again. I've had intermittent ABS light on for years. Sometimes it would stay on when engine starts and sometimes it would come on after driving for a while. Of course the ABS and cruise control wouldn't work and the engine would go into limp mode when the ABS light is on. I've replace the sensor cables, brake light switch, computer board, alternator and voltage regulator which are the parts associated with the system. Until today I've never been able to define a common way to define what turned the light on except I would notice that it came on in stop and go traffic sometimes. I could never tell what I was doing that made the light come on. Today I was driving in traffic and as I put my foot on the brake I felt a "bump" as I pressed the brake peddle and at the same instant I saw the ABS light come on.
Any suggestions as to what part may have caused the "bump" and that would cause the ABS system light to come on?

Re: ABS light

The bump you feel when the ABS light turns on is most likely the ABS pump activating briefly before the computer shuts it down, throwing the code or light. To figure out why the ABS pump activates when it shouldn’t, you need to read ABS fault codes.

RE: ABS light

Just given the symptoms you mention, I would hunt down, inspect and reseat all of the ABS related connectors. Included in that is the switch on the brake pedal.  While you are at it, replace that switch.  The design is flawed and the bit of metal that flexes inside the switch cracks after X,000,000 pedal presses.

RE: ABS light

Thanks, I failed to mention that I've replaced the brake pedal switch also. The dealer was too busy to check ABS codes but assured me they would be saved. I'll go to dealer at end of week.
Thanks, Burch
