722.6 transmission drive delay when cold

My 2000 G500 has been acting strangely again now that the morning temperatures have been cooler. When the vehicle is cold, upon engine start and drive selection it seems not to energize the internal forward pump pressure for 2-6 seconds, ending with a bang of engagement and a good forward lurch. 1st gear is all she will give me for a few miles until the temperature comes up. If I manually place the shift selector in 1-2-3 the transmission doesn’t give me the delay-bang and typically allows up to third gear if 3 is selected, placing the selector to 4-5 while in third just locks in third, even after stopping.

I just had the lights on for rain on a cold start, lighting up the shift selector lights, 1-2-3-n-p all illuminate normally. 4-D are tempemental wiggling the shifter occasionally light up 4-D and the transmission shifts normally when cold if the contacts are made in D. My star system agrees with the sticky contacts/lights in the shifter.

Fluid level is good, replaced conductor plate and plug, fluid and filter in ‘15 30K ago, due for service. No transmission codes from star and all actuations test normally with exception of the intermittent shift selector position. Shift selector was rebuilt in ‘11, lubed in 13, 15, ‘18.

I was going to pull the trans for a rebuild until the shift selector became the obvious fault today. Anyone have experience with rebuilding/ cleaning electrical components of selector or is ordering a new one the way to go($350-$500)?

Thanks for reading this long discription.

Matt

RE: 722.6 transmission drive delay when cold

When I first got the G500, the best G mechanic at Europa Int'l told me to regularly exercise the shift lever from D down to 1. This to keep the electronic internals clean and operable.

Disassembling and cleaning the shift selector has been discussed here in the past, although I don't know by whom or how long ago. It might possibly have been burqueDoka.

Detailed WIS Instructions sent to you by email, as the file is too large to post here.

Re: 722.6 transmission drive delay when cold

Thanks for the WIS email! I am familiar with the removal and lubrication process, and regularly exercise all positions of the shifter to keep corrosion from setting in. https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/2105451332
#115 The black electrical box under the prnd4321 is the part at fault, I don’t know if it can be cracked open for service, contact cleaning, but it is only $120 new. Ordering it now along with transmission servicing kit, and new transmission cooler lines.

I will be adding a new towpin bumper along with a G55 transmission cooler relocation bracket. Seems like a perfect time to update the two lines going to the cooler.

nice reference. Not a difficult job. Just need to access from the cab and from underneath for linkage connections.

Re: 722.6 transmission drive delay when cold

Thanks JR! I have referenced that link every time the shift selector is removed. The op had the exact same symptoms that I do currently. The process is fun, kind of like cleaning a pistol or AR. The electrical switch part #115 is my problem, I have played with it a few times in the past but never attempted to disassemble it, when I get the new one I will tear into the old malfunctiong one to see if it is serviceable and report back.

Matt- Did your STAR tell you the control unit was the culprit?

Re: 722.6 transmission drive delay when cold

I have had to replace my shifter a couple of times. Luckily as a shared part with the ML among other models, it is not crazy expensive.

A full cup of coffee spilled into the shifter caused similar problems for me. It has been a few years so exact symptoms are foggy.

“Paulm”
No, not really.

It was an excellent tool. It pulled up and cleared transmission stored fault codes, which lead me to look for problems on the electrical side of the transmission. I could test most modules on the conductor plate and view speeds and pressures. When conducting those tests it gave some clues for the selector. It gave me access to epc/wis to educate me to come to a conclusion. It saved me money by not buying another bunch of parts that aren’t broken or have an indie look at it or a rebuild...

I’m happy.

Re: 722.6 transmission drive delay when cold

Happy to update, the electric module inside the shift selector was my problem. 30 minutes to R & R. Probably 5 minutes, 2 additional screws and some plastic clips to replace the electrical module vs. a new or rebuilt shift selector. I’ll try to crack into the old one to see if it’s serviceable.

edit: Add photos showing contact wear. I cleaned with electrical cleaner spray, bent 4 contact springs for a better connection, reassembled. Not tested, but field serviceable for sure, if in a bind.
