EVAP leak on a '12 G550 - smoke test results

Hi Gents,

My 2012 G550 has a check engine light. Codes are P0442 and P0456. I just completed a smoke test and there's an obvious leak from a plastic container next to the gas tank in the passenger rear fender.

See video.

https://youtu.be/o5VO8mYQYKg . (Hmm, I'm posting using chrome and I can't seem to add the link properly, sorry)

I don't have a workshop manual. Can anyone confirm that this is likely the source of my EVAP leak? I conducted the test with the engine off - if that matters. Is that the charcoal canister?? Anyone know the part number?

 TIA!

 Tom

RE: EVAP leak on a '12 G550 - smoke test results

It could be that the charcoal canister shut-off valve is leaking. This valve is located near the canister. It is supposed to be closed when the engine is off (to seal the fuel vapor system), closed when the system is "testing" itself (so the purge valve can pull a vacuum on the system), and open when the charcoal canister is being actively purged (engine on, purge valve open). My canister shut-off valve failed on my 2003 G and caused it to throw a leak code.

Thanks for the response. I know little to nothing about EVAP systems so I've been watching a few videos. In one, they mention that the shut valve by the tank is in the open position when the vehicle is off but this wasn't specific to Mercedes. I suppose I could test again with the ignition on to see if zi get the same results.
