i think my auto trans is dead

it is struggling to engage gears at the moment i did check the oil level in the trans but since then i found out i may have checked it incorrectly

which is a bit of a hassle may have to pay a little for this to get fixed but if i have to take the gearbox out i may as well remove the engine and get the turbo engine i have fixed and kill 2 birds with one stone

RE: i think my auto trans is dead

Is it really clunking into the next gear? If so then I think your clutch(s) within the gearbox may be fried, you can rebuild one or two that are bad but this is usually just the begining of teh whole thing going bad, thats why I just got a new gear box when mine did this.

Re: i think my auto trans is dead

Is this an automatic or manual trans (because I see next gear and clutch)? The word "auto" in your title is teasing my brain.

Re: i think my auto trans is dead

Replace the fluid and the filter. Check the fluid for debris/grit. The small valves in the auto box can malfuntion easily with the smallest of contaminates. The symtoms you describe are similar to a dirty box. It is amazing what something as simple as a lttle maintenance can do.

I had a similar situation with an 85 300d that I had years ago. Filter/fluid change did it.

Tha simple thing first.

Filter is inside the tranny. You have to drop the pan to access it.

Cleanliness approaching surgical conditions is the word here!

You MUST be scrupulously clean. The tiniest particle of dirt, dust and/or lint can plug up valves; and you don't want that!

Re: i think my auto trans is dead

My transmission was rebuild about a year ago. This is NOT something that you want to do yourself. Trust Me. It is about as complex as Diesel Injection Pump. Everything must be VERY Clean. The seals, and setting must be exact, and you will not have access to all of the specialty tools that you will need.
I used a Mercedes Mechanic. He told me if I remove the transmission, he would rebuild it (with parts and fluids) for $800. He was able to get the parts for 1/3 of the price that I could. It now runs better than before. During the process, I learned a lot about how these transmissions work. I also learned not to drive my truck through 4 feet of water (over the hood) and allow water to go down the dip-stick tube.

Re: i think my auto trans is dead

Chuck

For now he is inquiring about the difficulty of the filter/fluid change not the whole transmission rebuild. That I think he can handle as long as you are sugically clean in the process. Basically it is draining the fluid, unbolting and dropping the transmission pan, unbolting the old filter and replacing it with a new one. Then put it all back together. No special tools required just keep it clean.
