Fuel pump replacement - must relay change too?

Hello guys,

A quick query, I heard elsewhere that when changing the fuel pump (petrol M103 I-6), the fuel pump relay "should" be changed as well. Has anyone heard this before, is there any basis for that in the manuals, or is it unfounded advice..

Thanks

There is no need to change the relay unless it is faulty, I would advise however that you change the fuel filter and inspect the accumulator.

RE: Fuel pump replacement - must relay change too?

Thanks for the advice, as always much appreciated!
The filter was changed 2 weeks ago, so that should be okay, but I am curious, how do you inspect the accumulator, must it be removed? On the outside it looks in a state...(it's in the shadow in the photo below, making it look even dirtier)

Re: Fuel pump replacement - must relay change too?

I will look into that as well, thanks for the tip. The MB parts query site seems to be undergoing maintenance, but the russian EPC site gives the following part number:
0004760921 and 0004761021.
I hear these are expensive, but at the same time similar to those on other Bosch K-tronic injection-equipped cars (unverified).
Back to shopping it is...
oh and I found the answer on how to test the accumulator, courtesy of Hipine on the old forum.
"To check the accumulator, look at it up on the chassis rail ahead of the rear axle and find the low pressure line coming out of the back of it running back to the fuel tank. Remove that line and replace it with a length of tubing running into a catch can. Then pull the safety switch plug and turn the key to "run" to start the fuel pump. If you're getting fuel in the catch can, the accumulator's diaphragm is compromised and the unit needs to be replaced."

Re: Fuel pump replacement - must relay change too?

If both roughneck AND twodogs make a suggestion, then that makes it compulsory to follow :D
Upon inspection (removed the return tube to the tank, and turned the ignition to ON, no fuel came out of tube), it seems the accumulator is in working order. Tomorrow the pump arrives, I'll see if I can replicate my hot non-ignition problem again!

The help is much appreciated as always..enjoy this weekend!
