What kind of consumption can I expect of a 460 long version whit OM617? And whit an OM617A?

On a OM 617 I get about 28 mpg on a 617a around 25mpg but it depends a great deal on how you drive. |

Are you measuring your mileage in British mpG's? I got 24mpg (US), once. That was nearly empty, warmed up, mostly downhill with a tailwind. |

Alan, they must have magic diesel over there. I tend to drive hard and 20 mpg is about it with a NA 617 in the G.

If you drive hard, you'll get much poorer consumption figures.
If you drive easy and keep to around 80km/h, you'll get around 22-24mpg (US), even with an automatic.
In the city, you'll use more. If you really step on it, and stay at 100-110km/h for long periods of time, you can get as low as 12-13mpg (US).
Face it - the 460 is not built for speed. Keep a sedate speed and go a little easy on it, and you'll use much less fuel. Adding 10km/h to your aveage speed won't really get you there all that much faster, unless you're driving long distances.

Thank you all for the information. I think I have posed the question in an incorrect way.
I was trying to establish if the OM617.952 is more efficient than the OM617.931 and what kind of difference in consumption I could expect.
I’m looking at a long 460 whit an OM617.952 and same one told me to expect consumptions in the 25L for 100Km (9 mpg). I find this way too much especially because I’m under the impression that this engine is more efficient. |

You can expect in the realm of 20+ mpg from the OM617.952 in a G chassis. It has significantly more power and torque than the .931. The problem is it is pushing around a big heavy thing that is not too aerodynamic, and is spinning both axles full time. Our 123 Turbo D Wagon gets on average 26/27 mpg all of the time. It will go 75 mph all day long on the freeway and return that mpg. My naturally aspirated 300td would get similar fuel economy but did not have the power for sustained high speed. If driven very slowly it would return 30mpg. Driving style makes a difference and I think if you drove the hell out of it you wouldn't get less than 16/18 or so mpg. 9 mpg is ridiculous.

Steve do you think you are getting a bit lower fuel economy due to straight vegetable oil that you are burning and city driving?

Yeah, MPG dropps about 10% on veggie oil. The reduction would probably be less if I properly pre-heated the oil and refreshed the injectors. Those items are somewhere on the back side of my to-do list. |
