replacing front grill

On the way home today I hit a bird.
It hit my front grill on my AMG front bar (the black metal mesh), and bent it in on one side.

I ve managed to kinda bend it out again so you cant realy tell anymore.
But on closer inspection, you can tell its not smooth and it had been bent.

Does anyone know if that part itself is repacable and if so... is it easy? or does it have to done FRON behind etc?

thankx

If I remember correctly from Ianx's post, that whole black grill including the MB star is one big piece, searching on benzworld.org will probably yield some results.

Disregard my post, I've thought you meant the front fins.

RE: replacing front grill

The first time I took the grille out I broke five of the six clips. The MB dealer gave me replacement clips. The grille is removed from the front, there is no need to get behind the bumper. You need to carefully pull the grille out depressing the plastic locking tab on the clip.

Part number?

What's the part number, maybe one of us here in the States could get a grille and forward it to you?

Re: replacing front grill

Sh1t that's expensive! Hope it doesn't happen to me *knock on wood*

What I think you should do is to first pry it off carefully. Then lay a soft woolly cloth on a hard concrete floor, and place the grill on top of this with the front of the grill towards the floor.

Now take a tennisball, and slowly roll it around on the inside of the grill while moving the grill around on the ground as well so as to have it massage out and straighten the grill back to the original form.

I believe if you take your time, and use some softer cloths to keep between the grill and perhaps even wrap the tennis ball around it, slowly massaging the grill between these two surfaces, you should be able to bring it back to its original form.

I was going to place it on teh ground on a tea towel.
then place a tea towl on the other side with a small plank of wood.. then using a rubber mallet.. light tap away.

Re: replacing front grill

That oughta work too *thumbsup*

The tapping needs to be pretty precise and even, I think rolling a tennis ball might be easier, but don't take my word for it. I'm ONLY speculating here, as I've never tried it.

Good luck!

RE: replacing front grill

hey fgwinn.
there is a black plastic piece (which runs all along the grill) behind the clips. mines got a crack on the left hand side.
do you know if you can buy that as a spare part?
is so.. happen to know the part number?

RE: replacing front grill

If you are talking about the flexible black piece shown in the photo I posted above, I don't know the part number. Someone with the EPC DVD could probably look it up for you. If you are referring to the strip along the bottom edge of the bumper that is taped into place, the part is called "AMG front bumper under edge reinforcement" and the part number is 171 885 00 16. I think it is US $64.

Won't the parts counter at your local dealer look up the part number for you?
