ML died at the red light Engine wont start but it cranks
i was able to start it up after 2-3 min of trying
Next day i went to foodstore and its died at the red light again ( 6 lane road in the left lane )
i waited for 20-30 trying to start it up call MB road assistanse for towing
10 min later it started and i was lucky to get home
Now sould i buy CPS and replace it hoping that this sensor or tow it to stealer ???

Re: CPS ?

Might be the fuel pump, has it been running hard?

Just about the very same experience that I had. Went to the store, came out JUST got it started, a few days later drove around, engine got hot, would not start, called road side assistance, waited another 20 min. and she started...In my case it was the CPS.

Heat seems to be the tell tail sign, if your ML cools down and then it starts, the CPS would be my guess.

Cost me $300.00 part and labor. It probably is a DIY, but it is really tight in behind the driver side cylinder head, it even took the tech a bit of time to change it.

Re: CPS ?

Mad yes it could be the CPS, but i have never herad of the truck stalling out due to a faulty CPS. I would start with changing out the CPS then move on to the fuel pump. The main symptom of a bad cps is when the truck wont turn over, it will crank but not turn over. Mad has anything else been going on with the ML?

Mad, the CPS is tough to change out if you have big arms, if not, it should be a breeze.

Been there done that................... my CPS died last winter in Lakeland just after the wife and I had breakfast at Bob Evans on South Florida Ave. I did manage to get it started after many tries. I had it fixed at Central Florida Euro Cars in Lakeland. They charged me $239.36 parts and labor. It did not appear to be as easy of a job as some suggest. My 2 cents.

Re: CPS ?

^ right it is not easy, but if you do it from the undercarrage it isn't so bad.

^ right it is not easy, but if you do it from the undercarriage it isn't so bad.

Yes the tech worked on it from the undercarriage also. His problem was partly due to a hot/warm engine and I believe the 430 being a little larger makes it even harder to get to. I believe he mentioned something to the fact he unhooked the drive shaft to get to it.

Re: CPS ?

Nope, i did not have to unhook anything. Yes if you drive to the shop (if it is far) they will have to let it sit for about an hour or even two. Since their arms will be right beside the down pipes for the exhaust. And it gets pretty hot.

For me $300.CDN

Well worth the breakfest I had down the road. It IS a tight squeeze to get at it. I think it is a #8 torqe screw.

It was hot, the tech use some water to try to cool it down. I am not sure if it would be easier to reach from underneath, but, hey I did not try that route.

can I tell you on BMW's with the M54 inline 6 engine CPS are such a common replacement item that my dealer joked that he recommends people keep a spare in the glove box
