Blasted sunroof...

My sunroof is having trouble recently despite supposedly having been had the europa fix before i took delivery from them. When I watch the roof moving from the outside of the truck, the mechanism that drives the left side and right side of the roof seem out of sink… more specifically the left side doesn’t seem to do what it’s supposed to. The left side is lazy to open to the popped up position (where it is now) and then it wont close fully. It makes me think there's a link out of place right at the sunroof, but...

Anybody seen anything like this? Shortly before it got stuck, when returning it to the home position from having been slid back, it would make a little clunk about 2-3 inches before closing.

thanks ahead of time.

Re: Blasted sunroof...

It sounds like you either have garbage in the tracks or you have a broken bracket.

The sunroof is only driven by a central wire. The tracks can get crudded up though. There are also brackets and clips that can get screwed up in a myriad of ways. I'll try to attach the appropriate manual section. Not sure if that works on this forum.

Edit: the file is too big. I'll email it to you.

I agree with Braingears, had the same problem (broken bracket) a couple of years ago. After changing it for a new one the sunroof has never worked as it did in the beginning.

Re: Blasted sunroof...

I had to replace the brackets on both of my sedans. The sunroof design is identical, and in some cases, the parts are interchangeable too.

You did not have your G-Wagon model and year listed. You will see that many of the older models used interchangeable parts.

Re: Blasted sunroof...

Braingears, thanks for the pdf's and the reminder that i didn't have the vehicle in there. Opps. I'll head after my sunroof this evening and see what i can dig up.

Northsearoughneck, how does your sunroof behave differently afterward? Erik

Erik,

It seems to slide back and forth under a slight angle. I can't get it to slide completely straight and since it works like this I have stopped my efforts to fix it. Must admit thought that I am afraid that one of the brackets may crack again because of minor stress issues due to the sliding under an angle.

Anybody here who can help me with this 'under an angle' problem?

Oh no!

Oh, man, it's really stuck... and unfortunately it's stuck in the half popped up position. You want to get it into the slide back position so you can access some clips to remove the headliner part of the sunroof!... so i can't get to the 4 clips that are needed to get started on the thing... everything else happens after this step. i may have to break/cut something... any ideas?

I definitely have broken parts in there... i have a funny feeling it this isn't going to be a cheap repair either!.

Northsea, from my reading the paperwork posted by braingears, there should be some adjustments you can perform.
