What was the best engine ever put in a G

Hi All,

I'm trying to narrow my search for a cabrio and am trying to determine the best all around engine ever put in a G. I am most interested reliability and ease of maintenance. I would probably lean towards a diesel, and the more manual the better. Excluding a G55k , What would your dream G be and why.

Cheers,
Damon

RE: What was the best engine ever put in a G

Damon,

Many people "in the know" say that the OM 602.983 290GDT engine was the best from a reliability and simplicity standpoint. It seems to be the favourite choice of the guys spending weeks at a time in the boonies, i.e. - Africa.

I'm sure some of our European members will opine on this subject.

Yip the 290GDT! But I'm biased. The US Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance use the 290 GDT for their operations.
What more do you need to know?

I have also heard legendary things about the OM 606 D 30LA G300DT.

Thanks, Sean. Did the 290GDT ever make it into a pre electric 463 cabrio or was it only found in a 461 L & SWB? Also, I'm sure that this has been beaten to death somewhere else, but what are the key differences between the 461 and pre 1996 463 Cabrios?

Cheers,
Damon

i dont think, that there was a cabrio with the old 500 or 290 turbo diesel engine. When Mopagi wants a cabrio, which is reliable and easy to maintain, what abou the military 250GD Wolf?

Yes, right. In a cabrio the engines are very limited. I would avoid a Diesel when possible. None of them is really good.
The very best cabrio is the one with the current 5.0L engine. When you can get one from 1998-2000, that's it.

Was the 617a installed at the factory? I thought those were all retrofits?

I think the G320 CDI, here a description from the Swiss G Club:

Unfortunately all in German......I am sure that you will find a Relative, Boy,Girl,Mistress....Friend.....that can help you with the translating!

Although I have a 280GE. I will have to agree that the 290GDT is better. Slightly more power than my 280GE.

RE: What was the best engine ever put in a G

I heard in the Graz factory visit in September last year that the best G-klass ever build was the 290GDT. Another employer in Graz think the 290GDT was good but the best was/is the G270Cdi . So its not easy to answer witch is good or not. The old five cylinder diesel was also good when its came out new and still running in lots of cars..problety little slow in a heavy G
