GAL Signal

I am installing a Navigation unit in my 1996 G320. As in my 300GE I wanted to install a Becker Navigation System with a speed signal needed. Luckily I thought the GAL signal is already there (In ISO Connector cavity #1 is hoocked to a green white wire). Unfortunately the speed signal does not come through. Neither the old Unit from the 300GE recognises this signal nor the new Unit. So must be something else. Any Ideas?

Today I will check with a Volt meter, but I guess I will see nothing. Since I have no HAL-Sensor at the tranny I cant get any rectangle signal as a bypass.

The GAL signal can't be a CAN signal?

Klaus

PS: GAL = Geschwindigkeitsabhängige Lautstärkeregelung = speed dependant sound adjustment.

Re: GAL Signal

Hi Klaus,

Myself I'm trying to install an APS30 in my '91 300GD.

Not easy, because first, the head unit won't snap in the DIN-unit (seems as the aps30 is too long compared to the current Blaupunkt) and second when I connect and turn it on, I hear a faint sound in my (non-airbag) steering wheel (very strange I know) and third I know I need something like a "GAL geber". I found this ordernumber from VDO somewhere on a site: Hallgeber Mercedes : 0075.422.917 (can't be too expensive +- 30 euro).

I will bring my car to my mecanic tomorrow and ask more questions.

BTW: we're just back from your beautiful country (Trier) and drove 600km with the G through the Mosel and Bitburg/Trier area. Only saw one G, a grey G55AMG.
Congratulations on winning from Argintina as well ;-)

Re: GAL Signal

Hello FLX,

thanks, but the 91 is no problem at all. The Geber can be inserted into the speedo drive (Tachowelle) or if you already have a hall sensor, you can use it from the instrument cluster. You'll find details here...

http://www.gwagen.de/html/english/navigation.html

Interestingly the Connector A at the radio shows at Pin one with a 0,5mm² wire (gn/white) attached. This wire comes from ABS unit Connector C1. This wire has a level of 13,xx Volt in my vehicle when I start the engine. It stays there without change at any speed.

I will need to put a oszilloscope on it to really see what happens there. Then I need to disconnect the wire from the ABS unit and see if the wire has a short to Ignition. After disconnection I will know more.

Anyone else having this electrical gremlin?

Re: GAL Signal

Hallo Klaus,

I'm interested too in a solution because my Blaupunkt DAB54 Woodstock (DigitalAudioBroadcasting) also has this connection possibility, but I couldn't find any wiring present in my G (12/94 350GD).

Greetings,

Frank

Re: GAL Signal

Frank,

the '94 model should have a sensor at the tranny, right? There is your signal....

or does it already come w/o a hall sensor at the Transfer case?

Re: GAL Signal

well, getting closer. My 320 must be one of a kind becaue it uses the old ABS System on a new place. The "old" 320 ABS is located behind the glove box, the new one in the engine compartment under bonnet.

interestingly the old system schematics shows a black wire carrying the Speed signal, the Radio connector has a green / white calbe color.

We'll see what happens.
