Very Well Said !

Unfortunately a lot of great classic cars were destroyed during "modifications".

No doubt about it!

If you have any doubt, take a look at the heavily modified 1985 G which has been on Ebay for months. The seller doesn't seem to be able to give it away.

The 460 is like a historical home or landmark--it must be preserved in as much original state as possible.

Speaking of eBay, has anyone seen the latest abomination--a tricked out 1979 SWB G. I could only wince and shake my head in frustration.

Different strokes. I wonder how that engine does with those great big tires.

Re: Old G Wagen New Style

I went to Tahoe this weekend for the Fourth of July holiday in my 1985 280 GE, at one point heading up I-80 I was stuck in some boggy traffic following my cousin in her 2005 G500 Graz edition. I noticed a MB SL riding my ass and made haste to move over as soon as possible to let those individuals with faster cars pass me. So the guy in this SL rolls up next to me gives me a big grin and a thumbs up and yells "nice 460" then hammers the throttle eminating a beautiful noise which I saw from the back of the vehicle to be the first SL65 I've ever seen on the road. Also, the whole weekend we drove my 460 around West Shore and got plenty of stares, questions and positive comments. My cousin never gets those in her 2005. I find that there is definitely something to be said for owning a well maintained and era accurate G-Wagen. Just my 2 cents. Of course I also use my G-Wagen for hunting.skiing and fishing and not as my daily driver...

Re: Old G Wagen New Style

As for the mention of all older G's being some type of restoration project I have to agree. I bought what I consider to be a very clean and well represented 1985 with all the paperwork and a reputable previous/original owner who I can still call with questions (Captain Spalding). Since I have owned the car I have still had to send the car in to the body shop for some rust cleanup on the rocker panels, some dent removal, I had the fiberglass rear corner piece on the split rear bumper recast to match the other one and the whole rear bumper repainted so as to look unaltered, replaced the starter, mistakenly replaced the fuel pump when it was actually my spark plug module and coil. Yet, the car runs, looks good and while the bills have added up to about $3600 I really have to say I couldn't be happier. In fact I recently came to the conclusion that this is the one vehicle I will never sell. In fact the only modification, outside of the winch I just bought that ever truly enters my mind, is perhaps swapping out the 110 motor for a mechanical fuel injection V8 from the old 380 sedan or SL. But only rarely do I consider this swap, as I realized then I would just have a 110 motor sitting on a cherry picker in my garage that I would suddenly have an urge to completely rebuild.

Believe me; I turn a lot more heads, receive more praise, and receive a lot more attention with my '82 SWB than someone in their 2002+ G500 here.

I second that!!! I get twice as many people asking me about my SWB when I take the beast out on the streets than my wife does in her 2000 true G500.

The side molding are VERY functional as stated. I have laid my truck on it's side into a tree then winched it out while pulling the entire side to the G along the tree. The rubber strips protected everything. Out of the whole ordeal all I broke was the antenna on the side.
