Old G Wagen New Style

Hey everyone I bought a 1985 G500 3 weeks ago and I wanted to kind of make it look newer (not because I want to impress people and make myself look rich) and well the outside doesnt need much work at all mabye just a new paint job and some chrome stuff. But the interior is a different story. I know that I am going to put in designo seats and update the door panels put I was wondering is I could put in a dash from a newer c class and if I can can you give me a rough estimate of how much that it will cost me to put in the dash. I was thinking that t would probably fir because nothing on the G classes has really changed since then except new interior so mabye the newer ones have the same demensions of my 85.

I think you are going to spend the same money you payed for getting this beast.

I mean, changing the interior will also mean you re-engineer the switches for the difflocks from manual knobs to an electric, hydraulic, pneumatic system. In a 463 the diflock work with the described switches, in 1985 G they dont. There are million other reasons to advice not to change the dash. ...spend the money on fuel

Or even better, bring the Car back to a clear original shape. This might increase the value even more.

RE: Old G Wagen New Style

Welcome to our Forum. I was going to ask if you had purchased that heavily modified one in Texas that's been on Ebay forever, but I see that it's still there.

FWIW, there is no such thing as a 1985 G500. There were 1985 230GE's, 240GD's, 280GE's and 300GD's. That's all. Someone may have dropped a 5 liter engine into one of those, but that does not make it a G500. What engine do you have in there? Post some photos when you get a chance.

I think Klaus's answer to your question of cost is probably pretty good.

========

G_wagon_85,

I recommend that you keep the classic dash as I did for my 1986 280GE. When I bought my 1986 280GE in June of 2005, I modified the Gwagen because I was giving as a gift to my mother and she wanted certain specifications. The only updates I did for the interior was add sheepskin seat covers, burl wood for the steering wheel, shifter and knobs. For the exterior, I added metallic black paint, grill guard, white signal lenses, side steps, rear jump seats, 2005 G-class rims and the metal chrome tire cover.

The parts that I bought to modify my 1986 280GE was from Euro Truck Importers, LLC. which is operated by Sean Philyaw and I also used EBay.

Link: http://www.eurotruck-importers.com/index.htm

Below are some before and after photos of my 1986 280GE.

Congratulations on your purchase of your 1985 Gwagen and good luck in your modifications.

Take Care,

James Van Thach

RE: Old G Wagen New Style

Sorry for the confusion i guess i should have explained myself better the letters on the truck say g500 only because the previous owner put all new engine parts from a g500 in it. I bought it from the guy that bought the g wagen for his 23yr old daughter who wanted to look like she was driving a really expensive car so she put the g500 on it to make it look newer as her father says. Thats why i said that sorry for the confusion because I am just used to lookin at the letters on the truck instead of what it really is. Oh and by the way it is black with tinted back windows and that ugly black trim crap on the sides that I am hopefully going to get replaced with chrome soon.

You won't find a whole lot of fans or support in this group for chrome on the sides, or anywhere else on the truck. Those rubber side strips are very functional; and you would be a first around here to remove them.

So what engine did you say is in the truck?

A "lot of parts from a g500" could mean clear turn signal lights, clear side markers, the G500 marker. Have you looked under the hood?

Euro Truck and Fourbyfourclub are about the only places. Both read and post to this forum.

Re: Old G Wagen New Style

Like what eveyone else has mentioned or advised to you, I would keep your G looking as original as possible. It is not worth the money on upgrading to the latest and greatest (not necessarily going to be greatest since latest Gs have electrical gremlins under the dash). Believe me; I turn a lot more heads, receive more praise, and receive a lot more attention with my '82 SWB than someone in their 2002+ G500 here.

And replacing thaose rubber side trim strips with chrome will further decrease the value of your G. Speaking of chrome, I am surprised you have not mentioned anything about replacing wheels with something like DaVinci or Dubs rims. I would advise against this as well. I would only recommend wheels (MB, AMG, etc.) featured on Harold Pietschmann's site: http://www.4x4abc.com

I would not do more than what James did on the G for his mother. By the way, I love those wood knobs.

Some things are better left alone. I have a feeling if this project does take off, the end result will be very ugly. There will be lots of criticism afterwards.

The more Spartan the better as is the case with trucks driven off-road and otherwise. This modification is more problematic than practical in real use.

RE: Old G Wagen New Style

Mercedes G-Class W460 is a unique car. It is beautiful in an original condition without any "new style" mirrors and "designo leather" seats. Also, almost any W460 is an restoration project. Restoration of old classic car required a lot of time, money, knowledge and experience.
Any person who understand the uniqueness of any classic car will prefer car in original, unrestored condition. Unfortunately a lot of great classic cars were destroyed during "modifications".
