Spare Wheel Cover for larger tires....

Ok, guys it's the 4th today and I have a few hrs before the German-Italian Fussball game (may the better team win!) to unveil the secret of my spare wheel cover. A very simple solution!

Take a piece of plywood, I used a piece of 1/2" thick baltic plywood and cut a circle out of it to fit your wheel. I liked and used the dimension of the rim, but you could also cover half of the tire, I guess.
Drill a 3/8" hole in the center before you cover your wooden "wheel" with paint or any material you fancy. In my case, I used a piece of black vinyl cloth (to match my seats ) and some good (3M) spray adheasive. Pull it evenly over the edge, so it doesn't distort the finish outside.
The original G-wagen spare wheel mount center support has two small holes opposites from each other for a locking device or so. Through these two holes I fastened a sheave of thicker plywood (laminate 2 x 1/2" together) with two small Phillips head screws. The trick is to use a screw with a small enough head so it doen't protrude out of the center support - your wheel has to slip still over it!
The plywood sheave is cut to fit inside this steel center support, has a drilled 5/16" center hole and features a 1/4" x 20 "Tee Nut" (hardware store).
Now use a correct lenght of 1/4" x 20 threaded rod, cut a piece of 1/2" PVC as inside spacer, so the new cover is mounted flush & flat and not being sucked in to much when fastened.
The finished outside fastener could be just a washer and a 1/4" x 20 nut, wing nut or......I choose a flush nut with an allen key (hardware store) as a small theft determent.

Karl

BTW The original G-wagen spare mount has been redrilled to raise (1 1/4") the spare wheel on the rear door - to gain more access/clearance to the rear towing hitch. With my larger tires I barely get mt hands in there to lock the trailer's coupling device.

Hey! Looking at the second picture, you just gave me an idea on building an integrated mobile satellite dish that can be neatly stowed away in my spare wheel. That way you can catch all your World Cup games next time. Hehehe!!! That is a neat plan though.

I have 285/75R16 mounted on a standard 16" G-wagen rim, tires are by Firestone, all four turn when I hit the throttle and all four stop turning when I hit the brakes - works for me all the time

Spare Wheel Cover INSTEAD OF larger tires....

When tires are to cumbersome to be mounted on the door, this is a common bolt on option.
It easily houses rubber plugs, tools, resin and powerful pump for filling tires. + a whole lot of other tings.
