First G

Greetings all you Gs.

I'm on the move to the South Island of New Zealand. Buying some land in the foothills of the Southern Alps so there will be plenty of days that my S-Class will simply get stuck. So my solution... buy a G of course
I wont have the biggest budget so will be after an eighties model most likely. Any advice would be great. There aren't to many around here in NZ so I'm even looking at importing one from Japan. I did get offered a 280GE two years ago. It was mint with only 140 000kms. Think it was mid eighties. Should of bought it! oh well... I'm after a basic no frills beast as it will be put through it's paces from river crossings to snow to mud holes. If anyone can think of any models to avoid or any other things to watch out for that would be great. From what I can gather a 300GD would be one of the better picks.

Thanks heaps

Re: First G

Sean, I think you are making a great decision on purchasing a 460 G. You will enjoy it. Your G will feel right at home in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Once you decide on a model and purchase it, we cannot wait to see pictures of it.

Your 460 G, whether it be a 280GE or 300GD, will be easier to work on. You will have less electrical gremlins to worry about too.

Thanks again. I have emailed the owner. Hopefully it is still up for sale. Being a 91 300GE is there anything I should look out for? Very strange buying a vehicle I know little about. When it comes to W124s, 126s and 140s I could buy them with my eyes shut... but a G I'm in the dark.
Any help would be fantastic. Can't wait to own one. Better go do some web surfing to find out about different models.
Thanks again

Re: First G

I have a 85 300GD and a 96 320G and use them both for going skiing from Seattle, sea level up to 4,000 feet at Crystal Mpountain about 2 hours drive for skiing as well as traveling over two mountain passes for holidays of around 2500 feet each. The drive is totally different in both vehicles. For comfort I love the 320 the heated seats on cold mornings and after a days skiing, leather for durability and cleanability, all time four wheel drive and relatively fast up hill, I NEVER SPEED!. The 300GD is almost unbearable slow when I know there are first track awaiting me, so on those days I either leave earlier or take the 320. Either way you will fall in love with the G. I can not drive a sedan now because I am spoiled by the visibilty in the G. I hate driving my wife's diesel Passat because I can not see as well. Her car is so fast but I almost feel dangerous with the damm window pillars right in the blind spot. My advise is to go for it. Buy the one from up North and tell your existing mechanic that he will be helping keep another MB around for a long time. Best of luck to you and also know that G Class owners on this forum are all First Class people.

From another topic regarding Australia KERMIT wrote; I know a guy in Melbourne who has two 300GDs and is selling one. You can see it here:

But Melbourne is 3400km from Perth. Most Gs in Australia are 300GDs that came over in the 80s.
Good luck.

The price of the one for sale here in NZ scared me off. I started looking at mid to late 90s Range Rovers (photoman hides under table). Then I saw the light and emailed the one here in NZ again to get some interior pix. Hopefully it's still for sale so I can take a road trip to check it out. Sold my '66 Pontiac so I have some $ to spend thanks gwagon460swb for telling me about it!

Re: First G

I hope the G turns out to be in the condition you are looking for. We cannot wait for you to be an "official" part of the family and G ambassador representing New Zealand. I did not know Pontiacs were sold in New Zealand. I know today's Pontiacs (in the States) are Pontiac badged Holdens or borrowed Holden designs.

I can't wait either!
Pontiacs were not sold down here. Mine was imported into NZ. The Pontiac GTO is a Holden Monaro. They just stopped making them.

RE: First G

G wagons out of Japan fill the bill here in NZ as they are RHD. They do however all tend to be 230 though have seen the odd 3 litre one up there.NEVER a diesel . My 460 is a LWB but as my city is full of hills it was tedious so had a OM602 put in as it was 230GE . Would advise others to take care in doing this as the later Diesel engines require a lot of electronics to get them going properly. You will get error codes coming at you left right and centre that have to get sorted. That said I still would do it again as the lack of later RHD Diesel G wagons are not thick on the ground. My advice for a Jap import is to find one with A/C at least. Good Luck from a fellow South Islander
