Hi there!!

Newbie here, saying hi. I just purchased a 1984 300GD from the the dealership that I work for. It was traded in as "needs engine". The rest of the truck seems to be in fantastic shape. It doesnot have any rust, appears to have a factory winch and brushgaurd (at least all the writing is in German), and the interior is almost perfect. I feel like I stole it. Just a few questions though. Where is the best place to find parts? I need a few little things such as lenses for the tail lights. Where can I find wheels? I would love to put some wider wheels on without paying an arm and a leg for alloys. Does anybody here have experience with a turbo engine in their G Wagen? Since I am planning on a new engine I was curious about the turbo. My concern is that the turbo lag could be hazardous while offroading. I would hate to be launched over the crest of a hill because the turbo decided to kick in. This seems like a great site and I'm thrilled to stumble across it.

Re: Hi there!!

Glad you found a nice machine. Turbo lag does not give you a sudden afterburner effect. It is smooth and predictable. The primary criticism that people level at the 617A motors is that they do not have much power and torque at lower speeds. If your use the vehicle as an onroad truck most of the time the turbo is the way to go in my opinion. We drive a 123 turbodiesel wagon and it is so much better than the non turbo wagon I used for years that there is no comparison. It is possible to get more performance out of a non turbo and you may want to look at Amzimmy's posts about his motor mods. I have a stock 300GD and plan on replacing the motor with a turbo 617A. The G is very heavy and has the aerodynamics of a refrigerator. More power and torque with a 617A will make my truck right. Welcome to this forum, it is a great group of folks.

RE: Hi there!!

Welcome aboard. A lot of knowledge and resources here. Another good source is http://www.clubgwagen.com. Whatever it is you are looking for chances are someone here has already done it. Whatver it is that needs fixing chances are it has already happened to another member here.

When you say it "needs engine"....does it ? Are you driving it ? Have you had an experienced MB mechanic verify ? The russian mercedes website has a cool VIN lookup where you enter your VIN number and you can see what options your G came with.
Here it is: http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng. Just precede your VIN number with WDB.

Lastly, check out http://www.4x4abc.com fir info on wheels and pretty much anything else.

Good luck,
Mike

Welcome! If you would like to compare your winch with the factory winch, there are photos of the factory supplied winch here:

That winch is now on a G in Bailey, CO.

Re: Hi there!!

I have the turbo engine in my G. It is truely the way to go. Runs smooth great power ( my G is actually fast) cruise the interstate at around 75-80 mph.

It is a great transplant.
