They are a great bunch to work with and I highly recommend them. I don't know your budget but the new ones are very nice and my old one is realistically in very good shape assuming you want to mount a 5 foot long jackall to the outside to fill in the couple of holes I left behind, my old one also has two double jerry can holders if ya need em (with four more small holes in the top to secure them). I don't know where you are located, cough, profile, cough. but Tim is in Edmonton and Steve is in the UK. If you have any questions about the racks or tents, feel free to ask me and I'm sure they would be more than happy to help as well. The first pic is the old rack and the other two are the new rack. I see you're moving vertically up in the world A couple of weeks ago I went camping for a few days around Lillooet. It appears I followed in your illustrious foot/wheel prints. I drove up the Yalicom Valley, went up Poison Mtn and also sniffed around for and was uncertain of the road to the Big Bar Fraser River ferry. That was pretty adventurous of you doing the Recce trip up in that remote are alone. We'll see if Barb & I can come for the G-Amboree jaunt. Best Regards, Jim Gaetz

Does anyone here have the removable sides?

The awning on the new rack obscures the rail, and to accomodate the tent the rail is completely absent on the other side. The differences between the old style and the new style are:
Over all I think the old style was a bit more rugged and perhaps a bit better ergonomically and the new rack is a bit more versatile if you are cutting the rails and such. Ya roll the bones and take yer chances. The rack is specifically designed for the 463 but I don't think there are really any differences in the roof between the vehicles (assuming you don't have the safari top), certainly it fits my 460 fine. There is a price list on the hannibal.ca site I mentioned, a lwb rack without any of the extras will set you back around $1,500CAD plus taxes and shipping. Chris.

On the older ones the removable sides were optional as well as the knockout for the camp table and powdercoating. The sides are removable on all the new racks (lots of little bolts) and I think the other bits are still optional. The hannibal camp table by all accounts is awful although the cutout might well serve if you were to construct your own (or have one made). I think powdercoating is a very good idea if for no other reason than to keep you hands clean. Chris.

Is the Canadian distributor allowed to sell in the US? Back when I was having some communications with Hannibal in SA, they indicated that I had to buy from the US distributor - even though I could not get a decent response from them. Hannibal SA said the Canadian distributor was not allowed to sell in the US, in spite of the poor representation by the Rover store on the East Coast.

So this information may well be only 10% effective in North America. I do know that they have the ability to do stuff in the UK as well (I don't know any details so Steve may just have a good working relationship with the UK distributer if there is one) so that may be of help to some more people. My old g-wagen rack probably wouldn't count to any distributer agreements as it is a few years old now and last I saw holding the garage down. Or perhaps it is just a good excuse to have a nice vacation through the rockies, it isn't often that being Canadian helps when trying to buy stuff. Chris.

I'm not sure if they still import Hannibal stuff. Did anyone else have trouble getting the rubber channel to fit in the rain gutters? Mine wouldn't fit all the way in, and after about a year I found that it was keeping the space underneath permanently wet. I had a few spots of rust starting inside the rain gutter, and that's a bad place to let that happen. I tried using a number of different rubber extrusions that were slightly smaller, but basically there isn't much room. In the end, I just took the rubber off and set the rack directly into the rain gutter. I keep the gutter lightly oiled to stop any rust reappearing. Also, I found that the rack wasn't exactly the correct width for the G500. There is about 2" of width adjustment from what I recall, but even at the narrowest setting it was too wide. I had to file out all of the slots an extra half inch or so, and chop a bit off each cross-bar, to get it exactly right. It is an excellent rack. The difficulty is finding one, and finding replacement parts for it. Hannibal seems to have problems supporting USA customers.

I just received an e-mail from the horse's mouth. They are in fact allowed to sell to the US now (this may well have been direct fallout from your situation by the sounds of it) although they try to avoid any rover related products since that is the market that the american distributer is interested in serving. cball Member Date registered: Apr 2006 Location: Vancouver, B.C. Vehicle(s): '86 280GE Posts: 44 | RE: hannibal roof rack - rubber channel Yes the rubber stuff is a pain. On my truck, the front driver's side area never sucked completely down, with the new rack I levered out the gutter a bit in that area which seemed to do the trick. I checked the gutters fairly carefully when I put on the new rack and I didn't notice any signs of rust (making it about the only rust free part of the truck). There is certainly a lot of water that is held around that area though, mind you where I live it is being rained on four+ months of the year so the every thing else pales in comparison. Your width problems are interesting as both of mine were basically adjusted to about thier widest setting and dropped in with no real issues, although another quarter inch wider would have been even better. I wonder if this is a subtle 460->463 difference or if it is just something that evolved in the rack design over time. Chris.
