461 rough road shcks

planning to replace original/stock shocks soon, so i contacted a trusted g parts house often recommended here to get a quote. here is what they came back with:

"It appears your truck is different. I looked at shocks for a 460 and a 463 and none of the part numbers are close. That does not mean they will not fit. I do not know which Bilstein to tell you is right. The shocks from Mercedes for your truck are list as a standard p/n and a p/n for rough roads."

i think the p/n for rough roads is what i need, mainly because of this on my data card: Z11 export special version, for roads in bad condition. vin #: wdb46123827099597

just looking for a second or third opinion to be sure i get it right. any help or even a part # would be appreciated.

cheers,
dd

p.s.: the trusted vendor i contacted initially actually referred me to another vendor that offers better pricing -- pretty big of them.

Hello Thairish

You need the Sachs HD shocks to go with the set of springs that were fitted. You have red srings on the front and white springs on the rear. These are softer ride and make the vehicle sit slighty higher when unladen, but they need to be fitted with harder shocks to dampen out the greater recoil of the softer springs when going over bumpy roads. The MB part numbers for the shocks are:

A0043260400 Rear Shock
A0053234200 Front Shock

Obviously you'll need two of each.

If you look on the ZF Sachs on line catalog you can see the shocks say they are "for vehicles with off road suspension", plus I checked in my EPC with your VIN.

RE: 461 rough road shcks

hey mud.

great info and great website - exactly what i was looking for. many thanks. hopefully this can be of use to others as well -- maybe someone looking to replicate this 'Z11 export special version, for roads in bad condition' factory suspension package.

since you seem like you know your stuff, any insight into exactly what my transmission number (717443 26 757751) means? it's a 5-speed manual but not listed on harald's list, so i am interested in finding out more about it and what may be different. any light you could shed would be appreciated.

cheers,
dd

Re: 461 rough road shcks

Why not Koni damper? I have only good ecperience with them. Adjustable, very popular. etc.

Re: 461 rough road shcks

I too fitted Koni heavy track adjustable shocks front & rear to my G. Better drive and reliable. Intend to replace tired coil springs with King springs KMRR110 & KMFR109. I got this part code from the search in old BW thread. Any one has comments on these or shall I stick to MB original? Stiff price MB coil springs compared with King's...

RE: 461 rough road shcks

thanks harald. exactly what i was thinking - why would you not have it? not sure how you figured out that is what i have since the numbers are different, but i will take your word for it for now 'til i can get underneath to have a look for meself.

460332 & hakkaloong: thanks for the koni suggestion. i was leaning toward sticking to original mb parts (bilstein or sachs), but will look into koni further before making the call.

cheers,
dd

dd,

717443 26 757751 = 717.44 = 717.43/44 = GL 76/27

RE: 461 rough road shcks

Those are the standard shocks for a 461.238. Thairish vehicle has SA28356 /01 "Shock absorvber bad roads" listed on datacard , however when you select that special version no parts are shown or listed on EPC. Its very strange - anyone shed some light?

Mud Maniac's numbers are the correct ones for the SA.
