osprey Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | importing G-wagen from Canada I am considering purchasing a G from Canada and am wondering just how many hoops I'm going to have to jump thru to bring it into the US. I have checked with my state (Maine) Dept of Motor Vehicles and they have stated that it's no different then buying a car from another state. Any experiences you may have had along this line would be of help. Thanks Larry C | ||

However, if you should ever decide to sell it, you may have a limited pool of potential buyers if other states require more than your own. The only rock solid legal vehicle is one that's been fully federalized by a licensed registered importer and registered with the US DOT and EPA. Anything else is techinically here illegally and the individual proceeds in owning such a vehicle at their own risk. That's the long and the short of it. Has to be 25 yrs or older to be USDOT exempt. Do some reading here before you jump: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ If you are considering a purchase from Red Cougar Enterprises in Calgary, you might want to read a couple of the threads on Benzworld before you send them a single penny. I wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft or meter pole. | ||

Some are getting long in the tooth enough to be brought in to the US privately without federalization. I'm not up on the rquirements in that arena, but if I remember right it has to do with when the vehicle was produced, which to be legal would have to be established by VIN records, not just the fact that "the guy I bought it from SAID it was a 1980!". Not sure where a foreign title might fall in the realm of proof of DOB as far as the feds are concerned. This discussion always comes back to the fact that there's really no free lunch. 25+ year old foreign Gs are usually in such a state of neglect and disrepair (LMAO when I read that cougar sight saying that beater was used only for weekend get-aways or some such malarkey!) that they require more $ invested than if someone had just found a well cared for example here in the states where most of the trucks that are legally imported have been owned and cared for by enthusiasts.
