What is this

First off take a look at this set, went to see another G owner in De who should be here on p3 soon.
Second he was wondering if anyone would have a clue what the heck this thing was in his engine compartment.

Whatever it is, it's an after market add on of some sort. Put in by the Federalizer?

It would be interesting to see what it connects to. Perhaps the coil?

Dutch the person that did the Conversion to make it US acceptable must of been a HACK. It was not done by Europa. Anyway a good project.

I found the one under my hood on the cowling to be connected to something of a fuel controller which was under the dash and not hooked up to anything. Which I beleive was used at one time to richen or lean the fuel mixture at smogcheck time as it also appeared that this same unit was connected at one time to a plug/sensor in the exhaust pipe and the jetronic injection system.
So I will stick with the assumption that the item in question is a capacitator of some sort.

Here is a photo of mine...now out of the G an in my "I might need it someday pile"

Looks just like the one that was put on my 84 280GE when they Federalized it. There was also some physical feedback plumbing hooked onto the top of the fuel distributor.

That is a wirewound resistor. They are manufactured like that to dissipate heat, and to be bolted down to a metal surface to dissipate even more heat.

It doesn't do anything except get hot. I would imagine it is there to replace some part that was removed in the federalising process, for example a signal lamp, without changing how the circuit "looks" electrically. For example, if you just disconnected a lamp, it might light up a fault warning on the dashboard that the lamp had failed. If you put a resistor in circuit, then it looks like the original lamp is still in circuit, and you don't trigger a fault warning.

You could put a voltmeter across it, and then operate everything you can think of in turn until you get 12v. I'm guessing a stop lamp.

Some ignition conversions have resistors like this as part of their circuit, so thats another possibility.
