Flying-G Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | DIff Locks My 1985 280GE SWB is my best friend :). But there is only one thing I wish it had...Diffs. The truck, for all is offrading ability now, is missing that last element that made the G so famous. I was wondering (though I think I know the answer) if anyone has tried to add diff locks on a car were they were not standard. Is the compententry on the truck able to facilitate an after market installation? And is it possible to find MB parts from Eurotruck and such or order them from MB itself in Germany? I love my G. But I only envy those who have differentials on their cars. Any ideas? Is it cheaper just to buy another truck!! | ||

At some point they became standard, unfortunately for you it sounds like that happened after your truck was built. The easiest way might be to swap in G axles that have lockers. You would then have to complete the job with the right plumbing, hydraulic masters,resevoir etc. I suspect you could spend $5,000 very quickly getting it converted over. It is very likely a different truck would be the cheaper route. This assumes that you could sell the one you have. If you have the financial ability, simply ad another to the fleet | ||

With the glass "half full" approach, you could probably market it on Ebay with a description to the tune of: " this vehicle is very rare as it has only one diff-lock unlike most G's you see today...etc etc" (slight sarcasm). Mine has both, but for my needs I could probably easily get by with the rear only...which is in itself a very big plus. For the time I do need it I may just drive around that "big boulder" and take the high road. Good luck in your quest and whatever you decide to do will always be the right thing. On a side note, there sure seems to be a lot more Gs coming on the market to choose from. I will be looking for a second by next year, but for me half the fun is the actual "hunt" for the the right G....I rushed my first purchase a bit and lucked out with a few unseen issues by which now know waht to look for. After my purchase,all the "right" ones starting coming into the market and I had some "buyers remorse". I decided to spend the money and make mine as such and now wouldnt sell it for anything. While your truck may be called a 1985, it was probably built before then. In my 1984 (built in August 1984) 280GE, they were an extra cost option, available as rear only or both front and rear. I very rarely use the front diff, except to exercise it once in a while. | ||
