I saved a picture of a veggie tanking station a couple of years ago. I don't remember who on the old forum posted it but, it was a rather simple and affective set-up. A 1000 liter polyurethane tank, a 12 volt pump, a 12 volt battery, some hose, some PVC pipe and a wife or girlfriend to operate the whole contraption.
...

Richard

That was "stevegsmith". Post that picture. I'm trying to figure out all the parts I need. Steve: how about a parts list and sources? Gettin the IBC container hasn't proved to be easy. Perhaps I'm not being creative enough.

Re: Veggie Oil Update

Richard, you have a vegetarian G? It is my understanding that one of the big problems is hydrogenated oils. A rule of thumb by an experianced WVO user I know is that, "what is good for your body is probably best for the injection system." Pure oils like canola, corn, peanut and similar oils go through the system best. Oils that congeal and solidify will cause more issues, build up and clog stuff. In the US the oils that food service companies supply fast food companies for french fries tend to be artery clogging hydrogenated oils to enhance flavor etc.. These oils are best run through a biodiesel processor to get the bad stuff out.

The fuel station you saw was probably Steve Smith's.

Re: Veggie Oil Update

I must apoligize for the extra posts. The server was not letting me know that I posted and it obviously saw and posted my attempts. can somebody erase a couple of them? Dutch?

Alan, if you come up here in a pickup I will send you home with one of those WVO cubes free of charge. I can get used ones easily and they are pretty cheap.

Re: Veggie Oil Update

Hi All,
Here's the latest version of the depot tote. Unfortunately, the wife unit broke down and for some reason won't pump any more oil. Ohwell, at least it was working for the original picture. This is still not the right pump for the proper set-up. An electric rotary makes the most sense, I think. Rotary pumps were designed to move oil, even sludge. Problem is that electrified rotary pumps aren't cheap. This Fill-Rite diesel pump is super slow.
Regarding the parts, it's really a mixed bag of 3/4" pvc plumbing parts. The sucker wand is available on plantdrive.com. It has a 75 micron stainless screen filter built in where the hose connects to the 1 1/2" PVC.
I'm happy sending you detail pics if you'd like. Send me a PM or stevegsmith_13@yahoo.com for pics.
It's exciting to see so much new SVO chat.
Steve

Re: Veggie Oil Update

I have found that the best veggie oil is from Chinese places. One source changes all their oil every third day thus the amount og "meat fat" would not really be that high.
I filter in stages from 100 Micron down to 1 micron. Is it a bit of work? sure but saving $120 every other week just for my truck is well worth the work.
My biggest issue now is the 100 gallon tank full of ready WVO so I have been giving it away to my brother to run in his construction equiptment.
I decided for kicks to try 100% veggie oil in my truck, no mixing thinning or nothing. Starting was a bit tough. Took a few turns of the key. Thus my #2 tank is 50/50 and that starts with no issue. Once summer hits I should be just ducky on 100% but the nights here are still in the 40/50s a bit to cold to start on WVO at 100%
So far so good other then that..

Re: Veggie Oil Update

Rich i am glad that you have been working on this project!! I just have a simple set up, I have a 55 gal drum which i just dump the oil in, I keep it heated to about 100-110* and every so often i use a rv H20 pump, 12v to pump it up to a filter bag, which drains into a 10 gal bucket, It is quite fast, taking about 3 min to make 5 gals of filtered oil, Then into the G and into the dodge cummins it goes, Very simple, but it works for me!

SVO

Has anybody looked at the single tank solution offered here or know of somebody that did?
A kit consists out of inline heater, special injectors etc. Costly though at 900 Euro. But then you can just run svo!
http://www.elsbett.com/forms/ekit.htm
They actually do have convertion kits for G's!

I have looked it for over 1 year, a “friend of a friend” is using one in a VW whit great success. I would like to know same one whit 1 hand experience because I am seriously considering getting one of these kits.

RE: SVO

One reason I went with a two tank system was I thought having two sets of injectors that need to be modified at unspecified intervals seemed like the old razor & razor-blade scheme. But check with your friend and see how many times in the last year he had to have his injectors modified. I am curious as well. My other advise is to get into the pool you will figure out to swim some way either by trial and error or with help. Good luck.

RE: Veggie Oil Update

In another forum reference is made to a guy in Berkely who has the Elsbett system in his G. He is called Steve. He also seem to know pointedthree.
Anybody know him? I would like to get feedback re the Elsbett system in a G.

Mmmmmm. Now the fact that I'm blond really shines through. I think the Steve I'm looking for has made most of the posts in this thread.
I should start reading the profiles.

Re: Veggie Oil Update

Hi Johann,
I put the elsbett kit on a couple of years ago and it has worked fine. I noticed you read my reply to Nate's inquiry. That about says it all.
Back then, the instructions were very difficult to decifer. I have not seen the kit and instructions since. Had it not been for Craig Reece, now of Plantdrive, it would have been extremely difficult. Back then, Craig was selling kits for them and helping folks in the US with the installation of their kits. Craig has since joined forces with Ed Beggs of Neoteric Biofuels in Canada to create Plantdrive.
There is lots of info out there and plenty of sites to visit. I don't want to shoot down any one particular kit but there are cheaper kits of equivalent quality out there.
In my opinion, tech support is an extremely valuable feature. If it's easy for you to speak to Germany and/or your truck is not a daily driver and you're mechanically inclined, then Elsbett will be fine. Once you buy a kit from Plantdrive, they're very quick to respond to tech questions.
I have read lots of forums and heard many horror stories regarding certain folks out there claiming to be experts in conversion components. So, keep talking to people for consumer reports. I think that's the safest way to qualify kits.
Your welcome to email me with questions or other comments.

Good luck,
Steve

Re: Veggie Oil Update

Steve,
How often do you have your injectors re-modified and how much does it cost if you don't mind me asking?

I met both Craig and Ed from Plantdrive and they are great people. They will support the devices they sell. They are also people you want to have dinner with.

OK, I've studied the photo and sourced all of the parts except the one labeled WIFE. Where do I get one of these?

Re: Veggie Oil Update

CEOG,
The injector nozzles were modified with nozzles supplied by Elsbett. I think to have them swapped out was around $25 each. Then, Elsbett suggested cranking up the pressure a bit. Lately, there has been talk as to the lack of need for doing so. Eitherway, it seems to work so you know the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I haven't taken them out since the conversion, although lately I have been curious about how they look. If I crack them in the future, I'll take a photo and post.

Roch207,
The Wife componant is widely abundant but extremely unreliable and brutally expensive. The most expensive aspect of the wife componant is the maintenance. Outfitting with clothing, shoes, and jewelry once is one thing but it doesn't stop there. Turns out you have to keep rotating with an entire wardrobe to keep the efficiency up. I've tried convincing the wife componant that it doesn't really ever need outfitting, in fact I encourage not wearing anything at all on a daily basis. But nooooooo, she insists that it's necessary for peak performance.

I don't know, sometimes it's easier to just do it myself. I still encourage non-outfitting though.

Good luck,
Steve

Re: Veggie Oil Update

Well 2K miles on my Ford F250 with WVO.
Findings so far
At any more then 75% WVO 25% diesel it is a bit tough to start in the morning after more then a day of sitting.
At a 5 ~ 1 WVO and Kero no issues at all with starting
Someone suggested WVO mixed with RUG and I do not recomend.
Seems that the RUG seperates from the WVO if set for about a week.
I have bought a 2 cylinder generator (diesel) Thus far I have 288 hours on it with the WVO Kero mix. Mind you it never gets cool so starting never an issue. I am going to stop it at 500 hours and see what the inside looks like.
More updates to come
