A/C Not Working

Hi, all
It's very hot and humid here in Japan. My A/C stopped wroking today.:banghead:

Here are what happened today.

I was offroading in very hot weather and strugling in off-camber(20 Degrees or little more) situation for couple of minutes.
I felt idling was slightly rough while I was at off-camber situation. Then, A/C stopped blowing cool air.

I then, checked Fan fuse. It was blown. I replaced the fuse and fan started working but stopped after 5 minutes.

From service window, I could not see a/c gas circulating. No current on pressure switch.
When I turn on a/c, no change in idling speed.

I would appreciate any input on what to check next.
Thank you in advance!!

If you have an A/C pressure manifold, I would check to see if you have any "freon". No freon = no cooling and the compressor won't work. Do you see any evidence of freon leakage - i.e. oily spots at any of the connections?

A/C is one of the harder systems to diagnose without proper equipment; and a computer diagnosis is not one of those pieces of equipment.

Re: A/C Not Working

I agree with Dutch. I would connect it to a set of gauges and see if there is any pressure in the system.
I know that I have killed mine recently. It only holds freon for about a week...
I found the leak in the condenser in front of the radiator.

I put JB Weld on a leak in the condensor of my 280GE; and it held for over 10 years. It's worth a shot; and certainly cheaper than a new condensor.

Re: A/C Not Working

DUTCH and Chuck
I will check if I have pressure in a/c system. My guess was no gas too. I did not find any leak but will carefully inspect condensor and other fittings.

Zé,
I will visit dealer after I give up. This a/c seems to be not controlled by computer.

Re: A/C Not Working

When I removed the front grill cover, I could swear that my condensor is bent (or it could be an optical illusion). I have had the leak ever since I bought it. I can only assume that the previous owner filled-it-up before I got there. Now that mine is leaking a little faster, I am going to have to address it. Living in Florida requires A/C.

The funny thing is... I have been driving my G-Wagon as my daily driver without A/C for months. It really hasn't been that hot. The only real issue that I have is having to close the windows in order to talk on the phone...

RE: A/C Not Working

Yasu san,

I have got no experience with a/c systems but I have my best mate sitting right next to me and he is an a/c specialist. He was reading your post and here's what he told me to reply.

1) When the fan does not work properly it will result in high temperature and therefor high pressure within the condenser.

2) High pressure within the condenser results in the a/c system being shut off by the 'high pressure cut-out'.

3) Just replacing the fuse of the a/c fan, without checking whether the fan runs freely and smooth, makes the fuse blow out again after x amount of time.

4) The refrigerant does not flow because the compressor did not come in (compressor does not come in because of the 'high pressure cut-out').

5) Because the compressor does not come in there was no change in RPMs when your engine was idling.

6) Bubbles in the sight glass normally indicate a lack of refrigerant!

7) Leakage of the refrigerant most likely is not the problem because you said that your a/c was running properly right before it cut out.

8) To check whether or not the compressor and fan are working properly, run an electrical wire from the battery 'plus' to each individual component.

9) To check for the proper amount of refrigerant in your system without the use of pressure gauges, check the blow out temperature in the car.

10) The blow out temperature should be between 0 - 10 degrees Celsius while running the a/c on maximum and recycling mode under normal outside temperature conditions (+/- + 25 degrees Celsius).

I hope this will get you back on track and that you can solve your a/c problems.

Good luck and let us know if my expert mate was right

Regards, Rick and expert Sander

Rick,
Thanks for expert advice!
1) and 2) make sense with what was happening.
Fuse was blown for ? reason. Fan moves freely before and after a/c stopped.
I will do exactly 8) to see if fan is okay.

I'll let you know what went wrong.
