Folks, Im trying to see what kind of high mileage 2002+ G's are out there and what maintenance items owners are doing or plan to do to keep the vehicles running for quite a bit longer. My 2003 has 78K fairly trouble-free miles on it and I was curious what other have. -Leon

One problem I am finding is that MBUSA hasn't serviced any high-mileage G500s yet, so they don't know what to do. Also, they don't have some fluids in stock (eg TC gear oil, specific to the G only) because they never need it. At the last two services, I pretty much had to give them a list of things to do, taken from Haralds info. I had to buy my own TC gear oil, because the dealer didn't want to buy a drum of it that they would never use. But basically all I've done apart from engine oil-changes is to change the TC and differential gear oils. I'm still on the original tranny oil. And three spark plugs and coils. Had a new alternator at 55k. I put a new serpentine belt on at 70k, and carry the old one as spare (it looks new). I replaced the front brake rotors at 70k too. I think the only thing coming up is wheel bearings. Mine seem fine, even with a fair number of Mexico miles. But I've read that they aren't good for much more than 100k.

You would be surprised how much difference new front bearings change how the truck drives. They degrade pretty slowly so you don't really notice what you have lost. I had my 300GE done at 90 and my G320 done at 75k. Both came back like new trucks, the difference was impressive. If nothing else the CV boots probably need replacing around the milage you guys are at. You do not want to add $500+ to each side at bearing time. New boots are much cheaper.

I will look into finding the gear oils on my own; any recommendations? I go through this routine when trying to find appropriate motor oil for my Diesel VW, the dealers are cluless and often put in the wrong oil from what I have heard :-) Good idea on the spare belt. My rotors will need to be replaced in the next few months. -Leon W5YK - 8/22/2006 5:03 PM I have 75k on my 2002. Thanks for the heads up on the wheel bearings and boots.. I'm glad I asked. I also noticed that both you and Richard own Mog's - I may be picking your brains this time next year Brent - 8/22/2006 5:35 PM W5YK - 8/22/2006 6:03 PM I think the only thing coming up is wheel bearings. Regarding the gear oil, I wasn't able to locate any of the MT-90 for the Transfer Case locally, so I got some Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75W-90. I think that is the correct spec. The handbook doesn't give a spec, just a Merc sheet number, and that isn't very helpful since Merc doesn't have any of it available (one drum in the USA when I checked a few weeks ago). It takes three litres exactly, although it's difficult to pour it in straight from the bottles. The spec for the diffs is different, which is a bit inconsiderate of Merc. You'd think they could run one type of oil all round. I also ran the TC on some 80W dinousar oil that I had for the Mog axles. It ran on that for about 5,000 miles without any apparent problem. No breakdown, no shavings on the plug. I think I'm going to change the Mog over to synthetic gear oil, so I can just buy big drums of it and pump it into both trucks more easily. The mog drinks about 3 gallons per change. Regarding mogs - only buy one if you have a very tolerant wife. Your driveway will look like Pepboys in no time.

I have a question on gear-oil changes: Does any know the torque spec for the drain and filler-plugs on the TC and the diffs? Mine were really hard to undo the first time (cheater-bar hard).

I thought it really wasn't necessary to change the boots unless they'd had a chance to dry out (for lack of lube in the swivels) or are worn out? I'll likely be diving into my wheel bearings shortly.

I'm surpised that you couldn't find the MT90 locally, since Redline is a California company. I get all my Redline oils from a distributor in Pittsburg, PA.

I'll likely be diving into my wheel bearings shortly. The boots can tear even if there is plenty of lube in the housings. I am not sure if the factory uses grease of different colors so you can tell at a glance. The lube inside the boots generally gets creamy grey and you can see a difference in the swivel ball lube if one has broken open.

KERR Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Mileage on your MBUSA G?? I ran into the same deal im at 63k miles and called to get the 60K mile service done. I had to make an appointment for week or two down the road so they could get the oils and other things they needed. They also didn't do any Trans service. MB said for my fluid looks like new which is hard to believe considering how I drive. Long story short I got the same deal... well no one drive a G wagon a lot. They are just fun toys to most people and then are traded back in with low miles. She said the next closest G to mine that they service had 19 miles. As far as broken stuff the list is to long. but As for 48 miles i haven't had any problems that are not usual.. 52K battery and alt, 2 coil packs and 4 plugs went bad about 40K miles....
