Re: Tick, tick, tick....

I would switch fuel brands first, then a top end engine treatment/carbon treatment.

RE: Tick, tick, tick....

I know you broke your wankin' arm but you didn't elaborate on how loud it is. My ML430 has a generally mild tick in the mornings at start up but goes away after 10 to 15 minutes. Our trip to the mountains did it a lot of good because it runs really quite, now. (Got 21.5 mpg, too!).

Umm...I'd say it would be as loud as a baseball card hitting the spokes of a bike on daily cruising speeds (on the bike). I think it probably goes away after a bit of highway driving.

Would anything bad happen if we left it as is for now, or is this one of those do something about it ASAP things?

RE: Tick, tick, tick....

I assume you're talking about the 2002 ML320. If it's that loud, you have a problem. It could also be a broken piston skirt or worse. I wouldn't leave it to guessing. I'd park it and fix it now.

How loud is your ticking? I'd get a sound clip, but the tiny microphone in the camera would most likely exaggerate it.

Also, sometimes when I start it up, there is a series of rapid ticking for like two seconds. Almost like you turn the key for too long after starting it up.

Do you follow fss service interval? I find the engine getting louder when I keep the oil in for longer than 5k.

RE: Tick, tick, tick....

Followed the link and still can't figure out what the problem is. Does the ticking come on first start only - first thing in the morning and not after that? How long does it last? A few seconds, a minute or two or continous? Remember the fuel injectors always tick - louder at start-up, but you'll hear them at idle - and they do get loud, but that's a constant continous tick. If it goes away after a few seconds, it could just be the lifters being starved of oil - nothing to worry about, not a problem at all, you can go another several hundred thousand of miles even if this lifter tick came on every day!!! Anything longer than that, and not fuel injector related would concers me. It could be as "simple" as the exhaust manifold ($$$$$) to as complex as issues with the pistons ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)!!! Give us (at least me) some more info, if you can.

Some amount if ticking is normal. Often, it's louder in the cabin than under the hood. Mine did it from day one, at the factory, where I was assured it was normal.

Darkmann-- What I'm experiencing is basically all the time now. I don't recall it happening as much as before.

rudeney-- That's what I'm experiencing. More noticable in the cabin after startup, otherwise it's more noticable inside the cabin during idle.

Re: Tick, tick, tick....

Have you tried the stethoscope method of determining where the noise comes from?

You would have to remove the engine cover and, if you don't have a stethoscope, use a wooden dowel to your ear and gently prod all over the engine until you identify the source of the ticking; this method is very good at isolating some noises, for example you should be easily able to distinguish between a stuck valve lifter or a faulty injector.

Note that this is not necessarily a safe procedure, if you use a conductive prod and touch the ignition voltage, or touch some moving part, you could be injured (usual disclaimer) although you may then stop worrying about the noise.

Re: Tick, tick, tick....

My old 430 used to have lifter noise at start up that disappeared after a couple of minuets, it also puffed oil on start up, but was within the Benz oil consumption "limit". ( I personally can't see how Benz would be comfortable having a bunch of their "top of the line SUV's puking smoke on start up...)

My 55 does not use oil, makes no noise and puffs no smoke.

I don't know for sure if it's o.k. to "borrow" this link, but...

This may provide some insight.

I think some of what I could hear inside the cabin was not necesarily valve noise, but a combination of combustion and spark noise reverberating through the firewall.  From talking to some experts, what I have been told is if the noise is something like a sewing machine, then don't worry, but if it sounds more "clunky", like a Cummins diesel, it could be valve troubles.

It sounds more and more like an exhaust leak.

Huh, now that I think about it, it sounds like a little bit of a sewing machine.

Re: Tick, tick, tick....

Ticking is often called normal on benz's due to the carbon build up that out pour quality gasonline in the U.S causes in vehicles designed to run on better fuel, its nation wide for the most part. Some vehicles worse than others. Yes your "ticking" could be multiple things but the most common is carbon build up on the newer (98 & up) engines. Lifter noise on the older engines.

I thought that the dual plug design was supposed to eliminate the carbon problem?
