We are both right, and wait, there is even more good news...By making the engine more efficient=more HP, more MPG (if you don't use all that HP) AND because the dual plugs in effect "burn" the fuel in the combustion chamber twice (in milliseconds) you get less emissions and you should also have less carbon build up in the combustion chamber+with less carbon in the chamber and the top of the piston, less likelihood of detonation, because carbon on the top of a piston can "act" like a glow plug!! 
Asian, did you see my post regarding the FSS, I did it with the door closed, but now it looks as though the FSS is stuck in program mode??  |

I've been reading quite a bit on this product called SeaFoam. It supposedly cleans out the carbon buildup and whatnot in the engine. Most of the forums that I've read about it on said it helped with their idling, oil burning, and more importantly for me the valve tick...
Someone on another MB forum tried this stuff on their van and it's helped with the idling. I think I might go this route anyway just for the sake of the van (big oil burner, haven't checked since), but I'm still a little hesitant on trying it on the ML.... |

Ticking is often called normal on benz's due to the carbon build up that out pour quality gasonline in the U.S causes in vehicles designed to run on better fuel, its nation wide for the most part. Some vehicles worse than others. Yes your "ticking" could be multiple things but the most common is carbon build up on the newer (98 & up) engines. Lifter noise on the older engines.
Sam I haven't had this problem on either of my ML's ('99 & then '03) but I try to buy "premium - premium" gas. I usually; where available, use Exxon-Mobile or Shell. There are a lot of cheaper premiums around here but you get what you pay for. |
