RE: diesel sales up 31% and MBUSA announces 3 diesel SUVs

This was covered in the latest "Star" magazine - May/June '06, p. 38. Can't wait. Looking seriously at the ML 320 CDI.

Should be late 2008. The Mercedes/Freightliner/Dodge Turbodiesel Sprinter is 50 state already, since 2004.

RE: diesel sales up 31% and MBUSA announces 3 diesel SUVs

The Sprinter is 50 state because it is considered a truck. You can get a diesel Powerstroke, Cummins or Duramax in any state. You cannot get a passenger vehicle in the 5 moron states. According to my dealer, the GL is not going to be classified as a truck and therefore the CDI will not be available 50 state. I hate my state!

Its GVWR is over 8500 lbs that's why it falls into a different category.

Here's the table with California LEV 2 from Dieselnet.

Looks like none of the new 2007 MB diesels can make it: not the E320 CDI BlueTec, nor ML 320 CDI or R320 CDI.

Here are the EPA numbers, also from Dieselnet.

A car or truck under 8500 lbs has to comply to TIER II Bin 5 in order to make it to California.

If interested here's a report about 5 diesel prototype vehicles (Toyota, VW, Mercedes, Audi and a 5th mystery vehicle) being tested to meet Tier II bin 5. These tests were performed between April 2002 to October 2003.

Anyone know who made the mystery vehicle?

VW Touareg diesel 50 state legal

Looks like VW will sell the Touareg diesel in all 50 states. Why doesn't MBUSA do the same?

EDMUNDS: "A new set of more restrictive diesel emissions rules which go into effect January 1st of 2007 will force Volkswagen to restrict sales to 45 states next year, but for a period of about three months the Touareg TDI will be sold in all 50 states."

Re: diesel sales up 31% and MBUSA announces 3 diesel SUVs

And why isn't the G320 CDI listed in the article? I read the R,ML, GL and E, but no G???? That's odd.

In Germany, the G320 CDI is being produced (see the German MB website) and sold, but not here in the USA. What's going on?

If I had to guess, I know Jeep is using the 2.8 lt diesel in the Liberty and will be using it in the Wrangler for export. I gues syou could call the liberty a small wagon. Sounds like an independent, non factory related orgranization were running car E. They could be using a modified International diesel.

That's a 2.8 liter in the Liberty alright, but doesn't have enough power to be a contender. "E" has 150 kW or 201 hp..

My guess is that the independant organization is FEV who ran vehicle D, the Audi A4 diesel. Hmmm, the mystery.

True. It's a Bin 10 diesel, and for 2007+ Bin 8 is required, like for the JGC diesel and ML320 CDI.

Found out from another Benz Forum that the '07 ML320CDI is now on the MBUSA web site. As of this morning. Look at the torque on this beast! More than the ML500!

Test drove one today. Very nice vehicle. More damned whistles and bells that are really necessary.

I wonder how the availability of ULSD is.

My local station dispenses ULSD for a month now. Only problem is that MB doesn't sell diesels in California yet.
