I have been giving thought to adding an ML320 CDI to the "fleet". However, after seeing multiple reports of problems with the new 7-speed tranny, I think it's best to wait until they sort it out.

AsianML - 10/20/2006 7:10 AM Most of the problems should have been sorted out by now. A few SMALL things now, but not as bad as when it first came out. I hear that at least one MB model range is completely embargoed in Germany until they can get problems with the 7G-Tronic sorted out. Also heard that when low range is selected in the new G320CDI transfer case, it breaks the transmission. Too much torque? AMG will not touch that transmission for any of their conversions. "a few SMALL things"? Perhaps. Enough for me to hold off on a purchase.

Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: 7G-Tronic Problems ? Yes, the initial 7G-Tronic problems are well known. Part of the reason is that it is a rather advanced auto adaptive transmission and it's more difficult to teach to behave. More like teaching a teenager. Unbelievably difficult at first, but once they got it, they take off on their own. That may be one of the reasons why AMG refuses to use it in their conversions, and the reason why Bosch is having trouble to adapt it for the G320 CDI, resulting in the production hold. AMG does use the 7GTronic for the ML63 AMG, R63 AMG and S63 AMG, all probably requiring considerable development time which may be too expensive for the cost cutters for lower volume series... One can usually tell if the transmission behaves properly only after driving some 5000 to 8000 kilometers. If problems occur, the first step is to have the software levels brought up to the very latest version, engine, transmission etc etc. which often resolves things. And as AsiaML indicated problem reports have really dropped off recently indicating that MB is finally beginning to get a grip on the problem. It's a good idea to wait another year or so for folks who like to have more assurance that issues are really resolved now...

Not that I know of. Some recently reported GL450 problems are Airmatic compressor and idler pulley (once again). PS. Some AMG models with 7G-tronic: ML63 AMG R63 AMG CLK63 AMG E63 AMG E63 AMG wagon CLS63 AMG S63 AMG C63 AMG SLK55 AMG PS. No GL63 AMG planned according to AMG.
