2002 ML320 Audio: Volume Fluctuates

I'm the victim of the annoying noise compensation system on the radio. The volume turns itself up and down, supposedly according to the level of road noise. I want to disable this feature but the dealer has to do it. I also understand there is a microphone in the overhead console that can be unplugged to disable it. Has anyone done this to theirs and if so, did it work?

The volume will fluctuate based on ambient noise. But if you have NAV, that may make it worse. Check to make sure NAV isn't on (it could be on even if you see only radio on MCS).

Even though it's the same basic unit, Navigation is the only option this car doesn't have (I'd never use it, anyway). The dealer in Birmingham says they can turn off the feature and that most people do. I was wondering if the microphone disconnect would solve it. It is very annoying and removes any listening pleasure from the stereo. I'd just as rather drive the ML430 since that stereo kicks ass!

Funny, it used to happen on the ML quite a bit....I don't notice it anymore either because a) I rarely turn it on anymore or b) it broke by itself for me.

Does it actually try to compensate for ambient noise level? Or is it just bump up the volume based on road speed? I know the 2000 MCS has a "Speed dependent volume control" input.

That's a great question....l'm not exactly sure....My experience was this, as l drove quciker, my volume would increase, as l slowed down, it would decrease...The problem is this, it was very noticeable, not a smooth transition..very annoying.......

It is speed dependent volume control and it doesn't work very well. My wife was cruising along tonight and the volume just went up and scared her to death. At Crown Mercedes in Birmingham, the SA, J. W. Johnson, said that all customers choose to have the feature disabled through the AAM, which is what I'm going to do when I get a chance to happen by there. The tradition of bad MB electronics continues. The video system just went caput today, as well. It was a little flaky for the last week, but it worked. Now, nothing but flashing colors on the LCD screen.

The ambient noise compensation level in the S-Class is superb. But of course, that measures ambient noise and not speed.

I do notice that the volume in mine varies, but I have to pay attention to notice it. I am happy with the way mine works.

From what I understand, 02+ models, as yours are not speed dependent. I only notice it either when I open the window or when I come to a complete stop. Anybody tried disconnecting the sensor microphone?

RE: 2002 ML320 Audio: Volume Fluctuates

My wife likes to sing with the radio, and she keeps having to turn the volume down. She sings, the radio gets louder so she sings louder and the radio gets louder still. It would be great if we could turn that feature off for her so she wouldn't have to keep turning it down.
