Ml 270 Gearbox Issues

Hi I've got a facelift ml 270 with brabus D4 upgrade. The Car is great apart from some slipping in the auto box, on full or 3/4 throttle when it changes gear it appears to slip and will rev to 4,500 rpm for a split second. also it sometimes seems to take a while to engage reverse. My local dealer thought it was the electrohydraulic control unit and wanted £1200.00 to change it but wasn't sure. An Indie gearbox man says it's water getting into the gearbox through the radiator which has caused corrosion / wear. My guy who serviced it changed the gearbox oil and noticed that it was very black/burned and there was some metal swarf in the sump. Also the gear lever seems to get quite warm on a long run. Any ideas??

I have the same issue. They changed the oil and filter t see if this helped but no joy? They over filled the oil too and when i was towing my caravan (trailer in US) it blew out loads of gear box oil.......Dealer told me the ML270 CDI Auto sept 2000 has a valve in the gearbox to blow out excessive oil?? They are sending it to an auto specialist at my request.

I couldn't find any specific information on the D4 upgrade, how much extra power/torque do you have over the standard 270?

The extra torque may be responsible for your gearbox problems.

my ml270 does the same it slips between 3rd and 4th to about 4500rpm it also locks in first when it changes down on hard acceleration sometimes. I have noticed that the slipping occurs when the vehicle has warmed up and after travelling through a roundabout at speed.
would this be fixed by increasing the transmission fluid level.

RE: Ml 270 Gearbox Issues

Colin,

I have a MY2000 ML 270CDI also. My Transmission blew also. I replaced mine with a fully recondiftioned (same new) transmission from a specialist who does new ones in stuttgart. It costs my 1800 Euros for the tranny.

I made a pictorial DIY on the replacement. A number of members (including 1 member from UK) have used it to replace theirs. My replacement thread lists the right amount of oil.

Usually if you are patient you can get one from ebay and replace it yourself in 6-7 hours.

.... Those 722 transmissions just don't go for more than 100-150k KM's!.

.... it's no big deal to swap it out. So if you feel it is needed , just follow my DIY. Note the tools needed  (1. Car Lift, 2. Transmission Stand, Air Gun for unscrewing bolts, 3. Very long extension to Air Gun, Oil Funnel & Filter). Mercedes do replacement transmissions, they do not recommend the costs of a new transmission. MB Dealers also get the transmissions from the same place I did.

PS: Make sure you don't just pour the oil in directly. Use an Oil filter!!!!!

You may have an older transmission. Those are more prone to failures. Improvements in the newer ones are:-

1. Magnet in the pan

2. Change of parts to stop them moving if motion is not needed. (this helped greatly increase the life expectancy)
