Removing Ashtray

Can anyone here tell me how to remove the entire ashtray apparatus out of its space. Not the little tray that sits inside but the entire unit. It would seem that something has lodged itself behind the ashtray and now I can't get it to close. Thanks for the help.

RE: Removing Ashtray

I wanted to take mine out because there were some papers from the previous owner behind the ash tray that is in the front between the driver and passanger seats. I ended up squeezing my hand back there for about an hour and getting quite a few papers out. Now it works much, much better. Get someone with small hands to help you out. Angled tools might help as well.

All that to say, I think it only comes out if you remove the entire center console. But you can get things out of behind there with your hand with enough determination.

center console is easy to remove, no its not the entire center console its just the wood part. You have to unscrew the black compartment box take that out and that releases the back/top portion of the wood trim and then that comes out easily. 2 screws i think thats it. The black box is where hte built in cell-phone used to go.

OK, it looks as though I have to take the entire top of the center storage box off. I see a few torx/allen type screws. Where are the two clips I need to pop off. I have small hands, but they are like paws, Im missing a bunch of skin on them now from trying to get the stuff out.

Re: Removing Ashtray

Arrggh. So I got everything taken apart, removed the ashtray, found the offending culprit, a plastic listerine strips container. Threw that away, put everything back together and the ashtray spring wasnt working properly. Took everything apart, looked on the floor and found a cylinder that goes inside the spring. Put everything back together. The spring works far too well, the ashtray will not stay closed. So I'm back at square one with an ashtray that stays open...lovely. @#$%^&%^*$^&(^%*(!!! Any advice on what may be wrong now?

*Working on my ML makes me appreciate the relative simplicity and straightforward approach that is fixing my 280GE.

lol. Try pushing down really hard on the ashtray. Sometimes I have to force it closed on certain days.
