Engine coolant light

On cold starts my mom said she's noticed the Engine Coolant light come on and stay on. I saw it last night too. Before I saw it though, I left the ML running for less than five minutes and didn't notice anything (I left before the dummy lights went out). When my mom went outside, she said she saw the coolant light on. So I turned off the car and turned it back on. No light. My mom said the same thing happened again today after a cold start. She said it went away, but I don't know if she restarted the care or not.

Any suggestions? Doesn't sound like it happens on a warm start. I haven't gotten to checking the coolant level yet. Oh, does MB have recommended brands for coolant too?

Re: Engine coolant light

I went out and checked the coolant. It's halfway.

But that still doesn't explain why the light only shows up on cold starts and it goes off after restarting.

So I read the manual and it said to use MB coolant....is this another one of the ways to get your money? Any coolant will do?

Anybody? Anybody? :ahhh:

Here is a guess. When the engine has been off for a while, the coolant drains down into the system, leaving the sensor to see that the coolant is low.
Top the coolant up, then look for leaks!

Also, if coolant does have a chance to warm it will expand, indicating a higher level.

.......No, you should use MB coolant. Every thing that I have read indicates that you are asking for problems due to the material used to make the MB rad. Besides, it's not like you need to change it that often.

I'm told that you can also use Zerex G-05 (gold container) coolant....? If not, then to the dealer it is.

Re: Engine coolant light

I use Zerex G-05 in my ML500. It's just fine, it's essentially what MB uses, just remember it's not pre-mix. You have to do the mixing yourself.

That's great to know!! What stores sell them? Wallymart? AutoZone? I'll do some calling around too.

Okay, so it looks like AutoZone carries Zerex. Wal-Mart does not (well ours at least). Our location has it for $11 / gallon.

Re: Engine coolant light

Sounds about right. I live in SF and some how amazingly Kragen had a 2 for $15 deal the one day I walked in needing it. Nice...

Well since the coolant was half empty, I'm guessing during certain situations like hard braking or hard acceleration, or even turning (depending on where the sensor is located) it might have set the sensor off. I filled the coolant back and no light since.

Good luck with your ML500! Sorry I couldn't help.
