I don't know if this is news or not, but today I took my car in for leaky tranny and asked them to do the tranny service also. Apparently, MB is backing away from the lifetime tranny service and they now recomment that the fluid be changed between 60 and 100K - along with the xfer case and diff boxes.

RE: FYI ALL

Thanks for the FYI Darkman!! I think that most of us think that it makes lots of sense to change ALL fluids.

Re: FYI ALL

What is "lifetime"? - 60K, 100K, 200K, till it dies?

With the high-tech syn. trans. fluid MB uses in their trans., I think it should last for 100K, since in the old days trans. fluid usually lasted for about 60K.

My local dealer also recommends changing the fluid at 60K.

It's probably not MB policy change but local dealers trying to drum up some more businesses.

That said, I'm still going to change mine at 60K.

Cheap insurance against a $6000 repair bill.

This has been discussed a couple of times already, but as far as I know MBUSA has not changed its recommendation.

Mercedes in Germany did recommend a one time change at 60,000 km starting in March 2005 when the new fluid became available. But it was not retroactive for earlier transmissions as far as I know. Here's a previous discussion on P3:

Regardless, one should do whatever optimises the owner's happiness.

RE: FYI ALL

i have +110k miles on my tranny with original fluid and still shifts fine. I've been meaning to change it, but I think I'll wait until summer. Transfer case and diffs have fresh fluid in them and they made a big difference.

What was the difference that you noticed?

The car just rolls better and quieter. It's not as 'tight?' feeling. Less resistance i guess. I don't know why I didn't do it sonner. The drained oil smelled bad.

RE: FYI ALL

Me too, I noticed that the shifts were "quieter" and "smoother". Not that it was bad before, but things just seem to be "smoother" now and the car just seems "less fussy". I only have 72K on the E. Sometimes I wonder if what I feel is just pschycological, but I consider myself knowledgeble in these kinds of things. Afterall, my primary job function just a few years back used to be noise and vibration analysis!!! But there's one thing I noticed for certain that's not mind games: When I first replaced the OEM contis, I noticed a sinusoidal buzz at speed, very low frequency. I thought it was the tires but then when I did a second tire change, back to OEM tires, the low frequency buzz was still there. After the fluid change just a few weeks ago, the buzz is gone. I'm still trying to bring it back. I have no idea what it was but I'm glad I didn't wait to find out.
