Sticky throttle cable?

My wife just told me this morning the ML320 acts as if it will go dead when pulling out onto the highway. It will do it only once in the morning and it's okay the rest of the day. I think I know what it's doing. When I drove it once, it seemed as if it took an unusual amount of effort to push the accelerator pedal resulting in a split second surge with a point of hesitation. Any known issues with this?

RE: Sticky throttle cable?

Replace the pivot pin, and lube the cable and joints with white lithium grease. This lube seems to stay on longer than other lubes and feels much smoother.

Thanks. I'll try it. Glad to see someone knows about this.

along the lines of this, but not sure if it is cable!

the accelerator on our 270cdi feels stiff you push, it been like it for ages, but since im driving it more now it really annoys me, you cant get a smooth pedal movement from it, is this fixed by the method above or something else?

Thanks alot

Tom

I had a similar problem, I fixed it by:

1. Moving the throttle cable to reduce the radii of bends and loosened two tight cable clips which may only exist on right hand drive ML's.

2. Replacing the truly awful accelerator pedal pivot with a 10mm bolt and greasing it well, this also fixed the amazing amount of slop in the pedal.

3. Lightly reducing the strength of the several return springs in the throttle system.

I now noticed you're from the UK so I can be more specific as the throttle cable layout is different for right and left hand drives.

I found the accelerator cable was awkwardly placed along the side of the battery and the two clips which hold it along the coolant reservoir were far too tight clamping the inner.

The 10mm bolt is not so easy to access but is worth the effort, I removed the pedal assembly for ease of fitting, it is a good idea to have a tub of Plumbers Mait to hand as there were a few gaps in the bulkhead there which let in a lot of engine noise.
