Fuel Filter Question. Please help.

Hi all.

I have ML 430/ 2001 chassis number WDC 163 172 1A27 3984. I am planning to replace fuel filter to new one (see photos of the old one)
After checking the page ( http://www.buymbparts.com ) I found a a new one and a text as below:

As originally delivered, this model was equipped with fuel filter 163 477 02 01 which is no longer available. When replacing with 163 477 07 01 fuel filter, (1) 163 470 28 64 fuel line, (1) 163 470 29 64 fuel line, and (1) 163 470 37 64 fuel line are required.

Should I have a new 3 line filter or 2 line filter (old one)

I took some photos, but part number is not complete readable. I can see only two lines from the filter ???

Cheers.

RE: Fuel Filter Question. Please help.

As azinn said, 3 line is all you can get. It was modified by MB several years ago. Depending on who your dealer is, some agreed to comp the labor replacing the fuel lines while doing the fuel filter replacement (you still had to buy the part). The previous owner replaced mine.

Thank you, azinn and cmitch. It was a very professional answer from you.

I just wonder the purpose of this extra line. I had a BMW before and there was only two lines, one in and one out. Actually there are 4 together with MB filter. I could suppose the third one to be a return line back to tank, but they have even added this extra tiny line (numb.4) to other side of filter.

Simple question. Could somebody maybe know any other similar filter (like the old one), which can be replaced to its position. "It is only filter and fitted very simple way"

RE: Fuel Filter Question. Please help.

After a small study of service information I have to correct my previous post. The both filters (old and new one ) have a narrow line for ventilation and new filter is with pressure regulator and return line to tank.

I am not sure now could I just block the return line of this new filter and make a job easy for me, it might be slightly different from inside.

Anyway. I going to check is there any similar aftermarket filters available like the old MB filter. ( I replaced MAN filters to my BMW. meaning oil, air and they worked fine

So,when you replace fuel filter-Do you have to replace fuel pump with new type or you still can use old fuel pump but need to upgrade fuel lines and filter ?

RE: Fuel Filter Question. Please help.

My dealer said just the fuel lines. But it's the old fuel filters that are damaging the fuel pump, according to the dealer that did my filter. As said before, fortunately, the previous owner already had replaced the fuel lines.

I think that dealer is blowing smoke. when my fuel pump died at around 50k miles, i went ahead and bought the new filter and lines, assuming they needed updating also. WRONG! it had the new filter on it already. I changed it anyway. the fuel lines are very clever; you just pinch and pull; piece of cake.

But, yours, at one time, had the old fuel filter and lines. Right? My fuel pump died on the 99 when the first owner had it and that's when they modified the fuel filter and lines at about 60k miles. The present fuel pump has 111,000 miles on it.

Thank you to everybody !!!

Ok. looks like I have to do this job according MBservice information from previous post. Is there a call from MB about this fuel pump issue???.

Just a small Question again. How I replace fuel lines to new fuel filter back again (see the photos of first post of fuel filter)

Here is a link to Wolfgang's ML page. It details the install of the new fuel filter. He could also have something in the shop talk section about the fuel lines, as well.
