rear suspension issues.

Wondering if anyone has this issue. on my 2000 ML55 with 93K miles, My rear suspension feels a slight shift.

As the truck is on a standing stop. When I accelerate I feel a slight shift in the rear before the truck moves. This shifting feel is not felt when the car is in motion or if I accelerate when the truck is slightly rolling.

Just wondering what I need to replace. Thanks for any help.

RE: rear suspension issues.

That is hard to nail without actually driving the truck. It could be the rear differential.

RE: rear suspension issues.

There are also some white plastic bushings on the rear suspension components that are known to rupture. You can check them as well.

Man, this is a hard one. It could be a host of things from body mounts to bad shocks, to the poly bushings cmitch just described earlier, and none of these would allow for visual nailing of the problem. Have a tech test drive/diagnose the issue then take it from there. Do you feel like the vehicle is trying to move without taking you along or are you moving fine, but the rest of the hardware has a delay? The driver's seat attachment bolts could also be part of it. Engine mounts are also becoming an issue with older MLs. Take her in.

Does the same thing happen in reverse?

Is it worse when you change direction from forward to reverse or vice versa?

Can anybody at the rear of the ML hear a clunk or see anything?

Sorry I cannot be more help.

Re: rear suspension issues.

It doesnt make any sound but you can feel a delay some sort of Play. This only happen when it is a complete stop and I accelerate. If I let the car roll a little and accelerate it is normal. No delay. No play.

Wonder if it is a ball joint or diff bushing.. I dont think it is the diff because there is absolutely no play under normal driving condition. I looked at all the control arm bushing. No visible damage or wear.

It feels most at the driver side rear area.

I even check the spare tire but it is secured tightly.

I am more and more getting the feeling you're describing worn suspension components.

Re: rear suspension issues.

Update. Still cannot find the worn part. I had the car on a lift at my Indy. He pry around all the bushing and cannot find any worn or failed bushing. He said it doesnt make any noise and all the bushing are sound. It is safe to drive.

Now I have a bigger problem of failing cat converters.

To change to OEM cat is $2000 a side and even a hole in the wall muffler shop wants $800 to change all 4 cats.

RE: rear suspension issues.

UPDATE! finally fixed it. It was the engine mount. Took it to a dealer and it was repaired with 2 new engine mount and 4.5 hours of Labor. Wow the truck felt much smoother. Love it.
