Question for multiple ML owners

Anyone noticed the huge difference in auto insurance rates between them? I'm paying $301.00 every 6 months on the 99 ML430 BUT the insurance for the 2002 is $243.00! This is for identical coverage with both drivers rated the same. I asked the agent and he said there is a number they use to factor in 'risk' of death, injury and damages. He said parts for the 99 model are on average 20% MORE than related replacement parts on the 2002! Also, he said the safety of the 99 is well behind that of the 2002. I guess side curtain airbags would lend to that. I'm a little confused about the parts, though. The windshield, parktronic bumpers are much more to replace on the 2002. Thoughts anyone?

RE: Question for multiple ML owners

I don't know about the parts thing but he's right on the safety thing. I went from a 02 320 to a 05 500 and my went up just a tad. I was thinking that the V8 would trigger undesird emotions for my insurance company but it didn't seem to bother them. Then I got a New Beetle convertible and the insurance cost is almost more that I pay for both the 05 500 and my 01 E430 - I guess there's more likeihood to splice body parts in a convertible!!!!! I don't even drive the thing.

RE: Question for multiple ML owners

My 2005 ML500's insurance is only about $35 more per year than my 1998 ML320.

Cmitch,

In Ont. Canada I am paying about $150. per month!! I have a very, very clean driving record and no claims!!

Is part of your insurance "attached" to your Plate? In Quebec, drivers pay alot more for a plate renewal as it also includes 3rd party coverage, and then not so much for private insurance.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining but just wondering about the difference. Our insurance is paid by owner to the carrier. The state does not charge a 3rd party rate on your tags when you renew (even though I think they should). We do have an insurance law and if you're caught driving without coverage it is a 500.00 fine but it's rarely enforced.

Your insurance is very high. The 2002 ML is $255.00 every six months and the 99 ML is $315.00 every six months. That is full coverage with 500 deductable collision and 250 deductable comprehensive and 100,000/300,000/100,000 liability. One factor I found out is that my 99 ML was rated as a 'work car' and the 2002 a 'pleasure' car. Pleasure cars cost less than work cars. I also found out my insurance went down nearly $70.00 every 6 months for all 3 vehicles . I only have liability on the 98 Dodge truck.
