| die autobahn ist wunderbar! greetings troops spent 2 weeks in germany mostly, first half of May 07. Cindy likes the train, I like to drive, so we compromised. car 1 week, train 1 week. I was supposed to get an Audi A3 with nav in Koln/Cologne, but the nice young lady who spoke very little english said 'nein'........ and showed me my BMW 320D. yep, 2 litre diesel, with nav. Ran like a clock. 220 km/h (140 mph) no sweat. and got about 24 mpg at that speed!! if i really babied it, it would get 45+ mpg. The autobahn was a kick. I dont know how you guys take pictures of the speedo when going that fast. I didnt even try. must be chicken, but i kept both hands on the wheel. neat things about the autobahn: very few trucks and very very few in the left lane. High gas prices? effective rail system? super smooth surface and nice gentle turns EVERYBODY gets out of the way when you swing into the left lane!!! gosh, they actually look in their rear view mirrors in Germany. almost every car that was cooking in the left lane was either a mercedes (saw several ml's), BMW, or Audi. saw ONE vette. reality check, if i understood it correctly, while there is no speed limit on the A-highways, if you crash going over 110 km/h (70 ish) INSURANCE DOES NOT PAY. Mostly pleasant experience. some bozo lightly keyed the passenger side of my ride in Braubach, but i found some buffing compound later in Rothenburg and got rid of 95% of it.
