The fluid is full and I see no air in it. I'm thinking of bleeding it at the rack but I know a couple here have had to replace the rack to solve this issue. I've also heard that the reservoir could be bad allowing air in it. Any thoughts? | |||

First hand xperience here as you know. I'd say try the Lubrizol thing as MB recommends in their TSB on this issue. If that doesn't work then go for the reservoir. The last thing you want to do is the rack replacement because even that didn't resolve my whine on the E. The ML just got done so the jury is still out. | |||

When put in the system, they mark the steering with some kind of visible ID mark (I believe it's some color marking) so that all techs know it's been used on the system. After one use on my truck, they decided to just replace the rack with upgraded components. | |||

There are times it seems the whine is louder than others. In my case, the lubrizol was just a formality because they rack was replaced the next day for the ML and I don't believe it was ever administered to the E - I didn't even get the truck after lubrizoling. The rack was replaced as part of the same work order. I believe they did this because MB wants them to do the lubrizol first. The tech probably drove it after lubrizoling and decided there was still a problem. The jury on the rack replacement is still out. On my E, about 1 year after the rack was replaced, the noise came back. This is its second replacement, so I can't say that it resolved the problem. The tech did say that the parts used for this work were updated specifically to resolve the problem. On my 02 320, the rack was replaced same time as the E's first replacement - actually, same day. I sold the 320, soon after, so I don't know if the problem persisted. On the 500, the rack was replaced just a few months ago (a couple of days before the E's second rack was put on), so it's hard to tell. The 500 and the E will have to go through a year's worth of work (who knows, maybe more, maybe less) for me to tell if these new hardware are working as desired. So far, no noises whatsoever. One question in my mind is whether these high pressure undercarriage washes could be causing this damage. All three cars go through these systems on a regular basis, more in the winter months. That's the only common factor I can find. They are in the same garage also and I do have snakes in the garage on several ocassions. Could there be a connection? I have no idea but am puzzled that all my MBs have had to go through this quite expensive repair. Edited by Darkmann 7/14/2007 11:17 AM | |||

I just lubed the torsion bars again with industrial strength silicone lubricant. Seems to have settled it down. I think I'm going to flush/drain my PS fluid and fill with the synthetic blend stuff. It quietened down my ML430 so maybe it will this one. | |||
