Rear bumper trim protector strip

I’d like to have a nice stainless steel trim piece to go on the top of my rear bumper to protect it when loading cargo.  Ideally, I’d like to have something that would curve down and “lip” over the first contour of the bumper.  I remember someone on another forum buying the W164 version and cutting it to fit, but it was really wimpy looking.  I want something beefier.  Anybody have any ideas?

Rodney,

I thought the W164 looked quite beefy ?....  Better than that aluminium foil,  or the clear plastic film at any rate!.

I think that the 3m film on the front is well worth it, personaly, I prefer the film to the bug/stone guards.

For the rear bumber, I agree with Peter, the 164 strip or the one from P.P.

I bought the W164 one (MB6 6 64 0100), it is curved more than the W163 bumper and is not the smartest mod, but I will install it one day.

The reason the picture shows it on my carpet and not on the car is because the installation instructions say that it should be put on the car only when the temperature is greater than 20° C. for 24 hours - and they sell it in England!

On the retrofit to the W163, you have to cut so much of it that it becomes very “shallow”. What I really want is a piece that will extend out from under the tailgate, and then over the first “roll” and down to the next edge of the bumper.

I was thinking of fitting it as is, instead of cutting it, this may look poor with the rear door open but should be OK with it shut; that way it does extend to the second edge of the bumper.

I saw an w164 500 with an aluminum strip on the back. The ML was black and the strip looked quite good!

It is known in the parts catalog as a Loading Sill Protector (MB6 6 64 0100) and it looks like this fitted:

I just used a 3M Clear film and it's done the job quite effectively compared with what happened to my former Ml320!!!
